唐の高僧・玄奘 (げんじょう。三蔵法師) が仏典を求めて天竺 (インド) へ旅した史実を題材としたこの物語は、中国四大奇書の一つとしても知られております。日本でも江戸時代から紹介され、昭和になると、映画、ドラマ、人形劇、アニメと様々にメディア展開され、今でも沢山の人に愛されている作品です。主人公に当たる四人のみならず、敵対する妖怪たちまでも人間味豊かに描かれており、単なる勧善懲悪にとどまらない面白さで、長年人々を魅了し続けてきました。
道中で出会う沢山の妖怪たちを、神通力で退治する大活劇の面白さは言うまでもなく、ユーモアと風刺を豊かに交えた中国民間説話の宝庫の一面もあり、物語を楽しみながら、自然と道徳心が養われる、お子様にもお勧めの一作です。

中国、明代の文学者。字は汝中、射陽山人と号す。淮安山陽の人で、貧しい文人の出。幼いころから文名高く、画にも才能を現した。役人としては長興県丞止まりで、ほとんど売文で生計をたて、貧困と不遇のうちに生涯を終えたという。詩文の多くは散逸したが、当時の復古派とも交流があり、独自の繊細さ、奥深さをもつ。一方、神異の談も好んだといわれ、『淮安府志』の記述などから『西遊記』の作者と言われているが、諸説ある。著作に『射陽先生存稿』、『禹鼎志』（序文）がある。(c)2017 Pan Rolling
