Publisher's summary

A pilot’s emergency maneuver lands him in court in this thriller by a New York Times bestselling author who “knows how to keep his readers turning pages” (Booklist).

On takeoff from Denver during a winter blizzard, an airliner piloted by veteran Captain Marty Mitchell overruns a commuter plane from behind. Bizarrely, the fuselage of the smaller aircraft is tenuously wedged onto the wing of his Boeing 757, leading Mitchell to an impossible life-or-death choice.

Mitchell’s decision will land the former military pilot in the crosshairs of a viciously ambitious district attorney determined to send him to prison for doing his job. Despondent and deeply wounded by what he sees as betrayal by the system, Mitchell at first refuses to defend himself or even assist the corporate lawyer forced to represent him.

Pitted against the prosecutorial prowess of a DA using Mitchell’s case to audition for a political appointment is young defense attorney Judith Winston. Her lack of experience in criminal cases could mean the end of Mitchell’s freedom, if he doesn’t end his own life first. But like the pilot she represents, she will not give up in the face of devastating odds—and she’s growing ever more determined to expose the corruption behind his personal nightmare.

Well... Didn't See that Coming

Although this audiobook felt heavily edited, it's a really, really great story. Almost anything written about the story would give it away - just know that if you are a John Nance fan this short story really doesn't disappoint.

Excellent

Great story and narration. Both the flying and courtroom scenes were very well done. Just a personal note: I could never get the Boeing 757 to land at 230 kts in my simulator.

Great Read

I really liked this audiobook. The only complaint is it was over much sooner than I wanted it to be.I’ll definitely be reading more of his books.

Scales balanced

Mr Jance, like his main character, shows that The Lady Justice can and will prevail as long as Truth is upheld and not vilified. Loved the story and the way it was presented.

Riveting!

I am so glad I found this author! I love reading/listening/watching stories about airplanes and what could happen on any given day. I am constantly amazed at the detail that is put into the stories about what goes on in the cockpit. You can definitely tell the author has first hand knowledge of flying one of the large jets. The characters are believable and you are drawn into their lives and stories. I can't wait to start my next book.

Outstanding

What a great book. I had no idea which direction the author would go…it is a great example of legal limitations and the possibility of unintended consequences.
As an aviator, I often wonder what if, and more importantly, what are the legal limitations when we have an emergency.

Extraordinary Story, Expertly Written and Narrated

16 Souls seamlessly integrates the best of airline disaster thrillers, the quintessential professionalism of a female corporate lawyer, and the jaundiced manipulation of a shallow criminal law. Replete with extreme suspense and characters who are at once understandable, this plot works like quicksand to incrementally engross the entire reader. Reader, beware the likelihood of wanting to devour this story without any breaks from start to finish. Thank you, Captain Nance
