About this listen

George Orwell's nineteen Eighty-Four is one of the most definitive texts of modern literature. Set in Oceania, one of the three inter-continental superstate that divided the world among themselves after a global war, Orwell's masterful critique of the political structures of the time, works itself out through the story of Winston Smith, a man caught in the webs of a dystopian future, and his clandestine love affair with Julia, a young woman he meets during the course of his work for the government. As much as it is an entertaining read, nineteen Eighty-Four is also a brilliant, and more importantly, a timeless satirical attack on the social and political structures of the world.

Remarkable! Bravo!

I can’t believe it took me so long to read/listen to this classic. I guess I felt I “knew” what it was about, and that was sufficient.

Well - it was insufficient!

This book deserves every measure of being considered a classic. It goes to the heart of the sort of tyranny that plagues our modern world. It’s haunting. The plot moves brilliantly, both expectantly and surprisingly.

We know how it will end, but we are really not sure.

The model of control seems extremely powerful. How could it ever be broken? Orwell anticipates the weakness of every other ugly system that has tyrannized mankind, and he makes sure the Party here and “Big Brother” bests them all.

It scared me. A lot. And I guess that’s what was intended.

The reader was quite good.

Highest marks here!!!!

The narrator did a great job

One of the classic referenced book by many that is a must read. Talks about a dystopian world in which Winston- the main character lives in. Where you are constantly watched and have no freedom to even think thoughts that does not agree with the state. No pleasures are permitted such as love. Where history is manipulated in the ministry of truth. Torture takes place in the ministry of love. And war is planned in the ministry of peace. The slogans of the ruling party WAR IS PEACE , FREEDOM IS SLAVERY , IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

9/10, would recommend.

the ending words gave me chills. the book gives you a perspective on the real life and society. almost as if it's "the book" of the world we live in.

MUST READ!!!

Excellent read. The narrator captures perfectly the warring hope, futility and horror of this most durable and important account of the evil that men do and will do when evolution mutates from the nobility of the human spirit into the torturous exercise of pure power.

This is Damn Good

whoa, very interesting considering climate of the world in 2021, this author has a deep understanding of the patterns of society or atleast a deep knowledge of other's written material, the end I did not like, but I also did not expect it

Good book ok narration

The story is amazing but the audio wasn’t exactly what the book had written and phrases should be repeated.

Great!

Good story. It was hard to hear when he talked quietly. That's not the narrator's fault, that voice track should been mixed differently. I also felt the need to turn the treble down...

a glimpse of the future!?

well written classic! listened to twice, found parts of it eerily connected to the present time. Some will find offense in what I write next but the truth is in the book and its link to present time. Double speak and black and white- seen in actions by the DNC of today- they say men can have babies and you should believe them. Rewrite history to fit their needs.Lies they tell with a tone and posture they believe they speak the truth. Hope big brother lets this review stand instead of putting it in the memory hole.

2024 or 1982?

This book is indistinguishable from current times of one would exaggerate our current system, though not by much. I encourage every American to read it with intention!
