About this listen

"A graceful love story...and an authentic presentation of the 1860s that reads with the simplicity and visual gusto of a period movie." (Readers' Favorite)

A courtship of convenience.

Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run-of-the-mill London merchant. He's grim and silent. A man of little emotion - or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she's ready to put an end to things.

A last chance for love.

But severing ties with her taciturn suitor isn't as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there's Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What's a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to Appersett House for Christmas and give him one last chance to win her? Only this time, there'll be no false formality. This time, they'll get to know each other for who they really are.

Quick, romantic, enjoyable

Wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy this, however I really did enjoy it. It’s a fairly quick listen, around 6hrs. I really liked the characters and you end up rooting for the two main ones!! :)

A Holiday by Gaslight

(May contain a spoiler about HEA!!!!l)

I really enjoyed this book. The only thing I disliked is Sophia's parents & the way she was treated by her family. It would have been nice for her alone to get a HEA. She was the only one that deserved it.

The Best!!!

I have absolutely loved every audible and book I have read by the amazing Mimi Matthews. Her writing and storylines speak to me and are exactly what I enjoy. Throw in Alex Wyndham as narrator and it is mesmorizing!! He has the perfect tone and voices for the characters, especially the hero. All I can say is I long for more with this combination!!

A simple novella full of holiday spirit

Loved the narrator's portrait of each character. The plot is simple but full of details and rich character development, and the writing is beautiful. Mimi Matthews's story made my heart flutter :)

Liked it

Enjoyed this book and the progression of story. The only issue I had with this book was the horrible thing the father said about daughters vs sons. It was not addressed and felt like a slap in the face with no justice.

Victorian Romance Shines in 'Holiday by Gaslight

I chose "A Holiday by Gaslight" primarily because its cover caught my eye. As someone who revels in the Victorian era and makes it a tradition to listen to a Christmas book each year, this novella seemed the perfect pick. It did not disappoint. Set in the 1860s, the story offers a vivid and engaging portrayal of the period, much like watching a classic film scene. The narrative follows Sophie Appersett, who is prepared to marry outside her class to help her family, and Mr. Edward Sharpe, a London merchant who is anything but typical with his grim and emotionally reserved demeanor.

After a brief and unsatisfactory courtship, Sophie is ready to end their arrangement. Still, familial pressures and a final Christmas gathering at Appersett House give Mr. Sharpe one last opportunity to win her heart. The story wonderfully mixes Victorian societal norms with the characters' personal growth as they strive to show their true selves beyond societal expectations. The authenticity of the setting, combined with the slow-building romance that blossoms into a genuine connection, made "A Holiday by Gaslight" a delightful and fulfilling listen, perfectly complementing the spirit of the holiday season.
