About this listen
Madison is about to be 13 and leaving everything she has grown up with. Florida has sun and beaches, woods and swamps. What will she do in Tennessee? Little does she know that she will inherit a key that unlocks more than a door. The women in her family have been known by many names going back through the centuries. They had been called witches and wise women, healers and herbalists. What they all had in common was knowledge, and now it was Madison's turn to share in the lessons of those before her.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Story
When Betty MacDonald married a marine and moved to a small chicken farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, she was largely unprepared for the rigors of life in the wild. With no running water, no electricity, a house in need of constant repair, and days that ran from four in the morning to nine at night, the MacDonalds had barely a moment to put their feet up and relax. And then came the children. Yet through every trial and pitfall - through chaos and catastrophe - this indomitable family somehow, mercifully, never lost its sense of humor.

She adores whipping up buttery muffins and other rich breakfast treats for her guests until Bernard Katz checks in. The overbearing land developer plans to build a resort next door where an endangered colony of black-chinned terns is nesting. Worried about the birds, the inevitable transformation of the sleepy fishing community, and her livelihood, Natalie takes a public stand against the project.

As a girl, Zorrie Underwood’s modest and hardscrabble home county was the only constant in her young life. After losing both her parents, Zorrie moved in with her aunt, whose own death orphaned Zorrie all over again, casting her off into the perilous realities and sublime landscapes of rural, Depression-era Indiana. Drifting west, Zorrie survived on odd jobs, sleeping in barns and under the stars, before finding a position at a radium processing plant. At the end of each day, the girls at her factory glowed from the radioactive material.

The narrator made this story for me
I enjoyed this story. The narrator makes it feel like a 13 year old girl is talking. I will now need the next in the series to find out what is going on. Way to get me hooked.
Worth it.

Sweet shirt story
After Madison's grandparents pass away, she, her parents and her younger brother move into the grandparents ' home. Having lived in Florida her entire life and enjoying the beach, Madison is afraid that she will become bored with her new life in Tennessee. When her mother gives her a mysterious key, it opens up a new world to her, a world rich in history and holistic practices.
This was a very short but sweet listen with very disruptive writing that ended too soon (but not abruptly). I would love to hear/read more about Madison as she discovers more of her family's history. Narrator Amy Franco did a good job bringing Madison to life.
