Publisher's summary

Enter the bazaar of the bizarre where fate and fortunes are for sale in this high-stakes magical adventure across a London not quite like our own, perfect for fans of Neverwhere and The Night Circus.

Below Covent Garden lies the Untermarkt, where anything and everything has a price: a lover's first blush, a month of honesty, a wisp of fortune. As a child, Deri was sold to one of the Market's most powerful merchants. Now, after years of watchful servitude, Deri finally spots a chance to buy not only his freedom but also his place amongst the Market's elite when he stumbles into the path of a runaway princess desperate to sell her royal destiny.

But news of the missing princess and her wayward destiny spreads. Royal enforcers and Master Merchants alike are after it. Outmanoeuvring them all would all be hard enough had Deri not just also met the love of his life, a young man called Owain, whose employers are using the Market for their own nefarious schemes.

Deri soon finds that the price of selling the royal destiny, making a name for himself, and saving the man he loves is dear. The cost of it all might just change the destiny of London forever.

Wholly original and fantastical

I can honestly say I’ve never read a story quite like this one. Fantastical, original, and a joy from start to finish.

Fantastic Narration

The narrator makes this story come alive. I enjoyed it completely. It takes a bit to get into the story, but it is worth it.

Beautiful fairytale performed with talent!

Just dark enough to evoke the feeling of the enceinte fairytales, where mortal people never knew what they were getting when dealing with the magical creatures. The story uses its premise and world in clever ways and weaves a tale full of characters and creatures.

Why did it end?

This was fantastic. I was immediately pulled into the story. Every thing about this was perfection. The story itself as well as the narration reminded me of why I read. The desire to delve into feelings and emotions not my own. To experience of something outside my limited view. Trip Galey is an amazing author who in conjunction with Will Watt put me strongly in mind of Neil Gaiman. This is one of my top picks of the year.

This might be perfect...

I was hooked immediately by Will Watt's voice, which is how I found my way here in the first place, having followed him from Alexis Hall's 10 Things That Never Happened, but also the writing! It was visceral, like I felt everything come alive immediately. It helps that the author, Trip Galey, called on familiar elements of fantasy without unnecessary explanation, clearly knowing what kind of reader this book would draw. Unlike another magical romance adventure with similar cover art, the battles in this book are made of wit, power, and relationship instead of the standard enchanted items that come alive to harm people physically, when you know that your main characters are always safe. This completely won me over. So many twists and turns and a perfect ending. I want more from Trip Galey and will be sharing this with everyone who'll listen.

Perfect

I very much enjoyed the story. There are many layers to the plot, not only in terms of character building and plot lines, but also as a social critic.
However, the best part of the book is no doubt the narrator. Will Watt creates a whole world of characters, this is an absolute delight.
