Publisher's summary

Hakan, son of Haldan, chosen son of the lord of the Northern Jutes, swears loyalty to his father in fire, in iron and in blood. But when a terrible tragedy befalls Hakan's household, he is forced to leave his world behind and pledge his sword to a new king. Nameless and alone, he embarks on a journey to fulfil his destiny as a great warrior.

Whispers of sinister forces in the north pull Hakan onwards to a kingdom plagued by mysterious and gruesome deaths. But does he have the strength to do battle with such dark foes? Or is death the only sane thing to seek in this world of blood and broken oaths?

Need the Rest Now!! Immersive Medieval Fantasy

Loved this—great historical fantasy in the land of Danes/Vikings, with horrible powerful beasts. Narration was perfect and the world we well built, totally an immersive experience. I will say, it starts out as a plain dark ages historical, then revs up with part 2. I think that’s why the prologue works, helps us know a change is coming.

I’m SAD that it seems the other books aren’t on audio. I think that’s a miss.

Fantastic

Solid, flawed, and likeable characters with good growth and development, Beautiful prose, at times hilarious and heartbreaking. This is one of my new favorites.

a bit angsty but has potential

there's plenty of room for the story to grow and flush out some of the stereotypes but overall a very good listen

Tedious dialogue, more sex than adventure

I really wanted to enjoy this story but it derailed only a few chapters in with predictable and boring dialogue and adolescent angst. I stuck it out a bit longer hoping it would improve, but got tired of skipping over the equally tedious bodice-ripping sex scenes. Maybe it gets better further in but I can’t stand any more.
