Joni Eareckson Tada
About this listen
In this eloquent account of her current struggle with physical pain, Joni Eareckson Tada offers her perspective on divine healing, God’s purposes, and what it means to live with joy. Over four decades ago, a diving accident left Joni a quadriplegic. Today, she faces a new battle: unrelenting pain. The ongoing urgency of this season in her life has caused Joni to return to foundational questions about suffering and God’s will.
A Place of Healing is not an ivory tower treatise on suffering. Its an intimate look into the life of a mature woman of God. Whether readers are enduring physical pain, financial loss, or relational grief, Joni invites them to process their suffering with her. Together, they will navigate the distance between God’s magnificent yes and heartbreaking no and find new hope for thriving in between.

Story
It's not what I lost. It's what I've found. I was only 17, just a girl, when God asked me for everything I had...my health, my hopes, my independence, my dreams, my freedom, and my mobility. He took it all. I was so angry with him that I tried to push him away. God relentlessly held me more closely. Looking back, 40 years later, I understand that God has changed and healed me - my heart and my mind - in the most unexpected ways, giving me rubies of his wisdom about an unbending faith and an experience of his mercy I can now tell you about.

In this book, Joni unveils the God whom she has found to be faithful through over 30 years as a paralytic. This is not the story of a woman who has all the answers or who is very different from you. Joni struggles with the same fears, questions, and heartaches we all have in common. But as the weeks and months turn into years and the years into decades, she meets her Savior at every turn.

Story
Hard times come for all in life, with no real explanation. When we walk through suffering, it has the potential to devastate and destroy, or to be the gateway to gratitude and joy. Elisabeth Elliot was no stranger to suffering. Her first husband, Jim, was murdered by the Waoroni people in Ecuador moments after he arrived in hopes of sharing the gospel. Her second husband was lost to cancer. Yet, it was in her deepest suffering that she learned the deepest lessons about God.

Story
“I want to believe, I want to have hope, but....” Pastor and author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it’s the hurt that shouts the loudest. Can God be good when life is not? You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good.

Story
Elisabeth Elliot was a young missionary in Ecuador when members of a violent Amazonian tribe savagely speared her husband, Jim, and his four colleagues. Incredibly, prayerfully, Elisabeth took her toddler daughter, snakebite kit, Bible, and journal...and lived in the jungle with the stone-age people who killed her husband. In this authorized biography, Ellen Vaughn uses Elisabeth’s private, unpublished journals, and candid interviews with her family and friends, to paint the adventures and misadventures God used to shape one of the most influential women in modern church history.

At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Life is fragile. But hope in Christ lasts forever. We tend to go about our day to day routines imagining this earthly existence of ours will just go on and on. But it won’t. Our stay on earth is really very brief. And when a loved one unexpectedly steps out of this life into eternity, it shakes us to the core. We ask ourselves: Is heaven real? Will I see him–will I see her–again? Will we be together again? How can I know for sure?

Story
In her new book, Stasi Eldredge meets listeners in their painful realities and offers an invitation to a joy that is defiant in the face of this broken world. This joy does not Pollyannaish-ly ignore life's heartache; rather, it insists that sorrow and loss do not have the final say. This kind of joy is present to both goodness and grief and interprets them in the light of heaven.

What can the incredible life of Moses teach us about modern Christianity? When you face your personal Red Sea, will you be prepared like Moses was? In Great Lives: Moses, pastor and bestselling author Charles Swindoll gives us the facts based squarely on the truth revealed in God's Word. He also fills in the fine-line details of Moses' life with emotion and feeling, because Moses, like all of us, was a human being with faults and frailties. And finally, Swindoll helps us apply the lessons of Moses' life to our own daily dilemmas.

In What Women Fear, acclaimed writer and speaker Angie Smith admits, "Fear is a major part of my testimony," as she talks openly about significant struggles she has experienced. It's easy to trust God when things are going our way and the world makes sense. But when suffering strikes—especially seemingly senseless suffering—we are filled with doubt and stunned by events spiraling beyond our control. In the midst of suffering, we often question the very foundation of our faith—our belief in the God who says he loves us. Joni Eareckson Tada, a woman who has lived in a wheelchair for more than thirty years, and Steve Estes, a pastor and one of Joni's closest friends, explore the answers. When God Weeps is not so much a book about suffering as it is about God.

Story
Picking up where he left off in his electrifying Letter to the American Church, Eric Metaxas renews and deepens his call to believers not to “practice” their faith but to live it—heroically and with joy. Invoking famous but misunderstood words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, he shows that God’s answer to evil is “religionless Christianity”—the rejection of religiosity and the embrace of a living and active faith, one that consumes the whole person and affects every aspect of his life. The awakening of this faith will bring revival, a “new birth of freedom,” and a renaissance of Christian culture.

Encouraging Book
Would you listen to A Place of Healing again? Why?
I enjoyed listening to
Who was your favorite character and why?
Joni Eeareckson Tada talks opening about the chronic pain that she experiences on a daily basis, and how she must live day by day in dependence upon God. She shares many other stories about adults and children who are confined to a wheelchair due to their disability, and their stories of courage and faith in God are inspiring.
What does Joni Eareckson Tada bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Joni narrates this book, and she does it in a conversational way that makes you feel as if you were sitting with her at her home, as she pours out her heart and shares the wisdom that she has learned through suffering. She sings a few short songs, which I have to say make this book precious. To hear her sing to the Lord through her pain is a special gift that she gives to us.
Any additional comments?
Joni talks about the Sovereignty of God over out trials, and how He works all things together for good. Working all things together for good sometimes means that He does not take the trial away. Joni shares how in the early days of her paralysis she prayed continually that God would heal her. She now sees the countless people who have been helped through her ministry because God chose not to heal her. One thing that really struck me in this book was when she talked about taking your eyes off your own problems and helping others. She gave examples of people she met who lay aside their own daily challenges to offer assistance to others. This book is not just for those who suffer from chronic pain or a disability. I was greatly encouraged by this book and it gave me a better perspective on how a Christian should view any kind of suffering in trials.

Needed This
The fact that Joni wrote this while in pain and awaiting surgery for breast cancer helps me. Joni is very honest and open about what it is like to live in her current situation yet reaching out to Jesus for strength.
I am going through a physically painful situation and I am encouraged.

Healing
Joni spoke of her disability openly and yet shared her fears, frustrations, and desires openly. The ultimate message is for us to talk to God sharing our pain and disappointment knowing He will strengthen us spiritually.

Hope
Her hope gives me hope through any pain. Love that it is read by the author. She sings to you and no one else could give the heart of it like Joni.

A needed blessing
Joni’s writing and voice were a needed blessing in a time of pain and struggles. She reminded me of the many blessings God has given us in our lives. I am thankful I was led to pick up the book and listen to the audio. Amen!

A Friend in Hardship
Listening to Joni's own voice makes this volume especially encouraging whether her voice is familiar or not, I suppose. I have listened to Joni many times on the radio since I first saw her movie and read her first book, "Joni", about 40 years ago. Listening to her story of recent years, and her struggle with chronic pain has encouraged me to love and trust God more in my own trials. The love of God flows through her words and goes straight to my heart. I feel as though I'm listening to a dear friend.
I recommend this book to anyone who has suffered or watched a loved one suffer.

Not enough good words for this
This book was so rich in wisdom and beauty of God’s glory and strengthening work in Joni that I bought the book too. It was too good of a resource to just listen, but I thought it needs to be studied and referenced. Everything she talks about are exactly things I have been wrestling through for the last few years. It was on par with where God has been leading my husband and I as we seek God in answered and unanswered prayers. I have learned to lean in in the hurt rather than draw back from God. It is not easy and I still struggle, but now I at least know what to do now instead of spiraling into despair and heartache unknowingly.
