Publisher's summary

“Do not decide what I can handle. All I want is honesty. If you’re going to steal a kiss, you’d better explain why I’m not good enough.” Tears pricked her eyes, and she batted against them. “I deserve that”.

A heartwarming WWII historical from award-winning author Cara Putman:

In the midst of World War II, when the Navy WAVES give Evelyn Happ the chance to get out of Washington, DC, and contribute to the war effort, she can’t leave fast enough. The fact that she can use her college degree to contribute to the war effort makes the assignment even better. She arrives in Dayton, Ohio, to learn the engineers and military professionals don’t take her seriously at all. Why is it so hard to believe that she’s more than a pretty face?

Mark Miller believes the WAVES are an unneeded distraction - the top secret project he’s assigned to is critical to the war and he and his team must focus on cracking the enigma code. Nothing they try works until a beautiful ensign offers solutions that help the engineers succeed in their mission. He’s not sure what to think about her, but has to admit that she’s brilliant enough to see the problem from a fresh perspective. He’s never met anyone like her and wants to know more.

When the actions of a spy put both Mark and Evelyn under suspicion, their loyalties to the country and each other are tested. Will their blossoming relationship survive, or be another casualty of war?

An Intriguing Part of US WWII History

I was intrigued by the unique historical point of view of this book. I had never heard the men (and women!) who stayed behind to work on breaking the code of the enemy. I love WWII history, and this book was an excellent trip into the culture of the time.
I felt a bit like a spy myself as I felt the tension and pressure put on the team of engineers to crack the code. I loved how smart Evelyn was, and how she fought to be able to use her skills. Mark was a gentleman, but sometimes his indecisiveness made me want to knock some sense into him. The romance was sweet, and I love the relationship between Evelyn and Mark's mother.
I also enjoyed seeing a woman who full heartedly believed in science also learn to give her heart to the Lord.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves WWII history. This is a unique aspect of the war not seen as much in history books, but the work of these people should be known.
I enjoyed listening to this book for both content and narrator. I will admit the dog got a few extra walks so I could finish it!
I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Sweet war-time romance

A sweet war-time story as two engineers navigate the waters of romance. I loved the role family played in this story, as Evelyn not only fights for recognition as a female engineer, but searches for truth to her questions of faith.

Sweet WWII Romance

A Promise Born is a sweet WWII romance by Cara C. Putman. It is second in the Ohio Brides series, but can easily be read as a stand-alone story. read several of this author's books before, I was looking forward to reading this and was not disappointed. Although not on the war-front, the story brought out interesting things about the war. I especially enjoyed hearing about the WAVES being involved in code-breaking and the Enigma code during the war. Engaging, believable characters, broken dreams, growing faith in the midst of fears and disappointments, and a captivating romance--A Promise Born has it all. Connie Shabshab does a great job narrating the book, giving voice to the characters and their story, making for an enjoyable listening experience. I won a copy of the audiobook version of the audiobook in a contest and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

WWII Homefront Romance

The narrator, Connie Shabshab, did a good job with this interesting historical fiction. With a clear and understandable voice, she communicated the characters and reflected the action of this WWII homefront romance. The story involves the stateside work of engineers and the military to break the enigma code. At the same time, one character seeks answers regarding faith, while others continue to walk their own path of faith. The author, Cara Putman, also adds a rocky romance in the mix. After listening to this book, I am curious about the other books in the series. I won a copy of this audiobook from the author. All opinions are my own.

So excited to have this audio book!!

I had read the previous book in the series and looked at the subject of this one and found it appealing. I found the reader’s voice easy to listen to, though there were more characters to the book than she had different voices. She did stay consistent with Evelyn’s voice which was very helpful. I used the audio book to pass the time on my commute, but I often was reluctant to shut it off to go in, so I guess that’s a sign of a good story, well told!

I enjoyed getting to “spend time” with Mark’s family again and I really liked his mom. Since I had a grandmother who served in the military, I liked this glimpse into the work of the WAVES. Also, I liked the presentation of Dayton, OH. I’m kind of a book nerd, so I get curious about the process of the author—the research they do, etc.

I think Cara did a good job developing even secondary characters and making each person interesting and a real part of the story. I definitely would recommend this book and the others in the series.
