About this listen
In this captivating Regency romance by award-winning author Elizabeth Mansfield, a woman decides to teach a proper-to-a-fault nobleman a lesson in love that he will never forget.
Sophia Edgerton knows how to make an entrance. Yet even she isn't prepared for the consequences when she throws herself into the arms of a total stranger at a society ball, mistaking him for her long-lost cousin. Marcus Harvey, fifth Earl of Wynwood, responds with a remark that sets the ton abuzz.
Determined to teach the arrogant nobleman a lesson, Sophy devises an exquisite payback to take place at the earl's ancestral estate. A party at Wynwood Hall is the event of the season, and tongues are soon wagging amid rumors of shocking behavior and scandalous liaisons. But when a betrothal is announced, the tables are suddenly turned. For Sophy has gone and done the unthinkable: She's lost her heart to a man who doesn't believe in love.

Story good. Narration bad.
I like this author, and own most of her books. I hesitated to buy this one as I did not care for the sound of the narrator in the sample, who has a little girl voice with a lisp. I felt it would have been a waste of a credit, but did feel it would be worth paying cash for the low discount price. At first I found listening to it very annoying, but after a while I was interested enough in the story to become used to the sound of the narrator.

madcap/hellion heroine insulted by stiff sprig gentleman hero
Though beautiful in a far from ordinary mode, we know the heroine, despite her madcap ways is desirable by the lecherous men who are after her. She takes a dislike to the hero who in several incidents insults her. The 3 deliberate acts of revenge she does are easily fixed. The more serious incidents that befall her are actually pure accidents by her or someone else or acts of misbehavior by other characters. Yet she either takes the blame for these mishaps or has it shoved onto her by others, including the hero. She may be accident prone but she is not evil as the negative reviews would have you believe. I honestly believe the negative reviewers are real life embodiments of the fictional self righteous step mother.
Although I did not dislike the hero's original fiancee, she did show some signs of becoming like her mother, personality wise, so it is just as well that betrothed does not last, especially as the hero's feelings for her were tepid and contained no love at all.
Because the most helpful reviews showing on the book's e-book and audio book pages were mostly negative, I had to use the inverse rule of reviews to decide to purchase this book.

Do not waste your time
It is hard to enjoy a story where the female lead is an idiot and not a good example to follow. Nobody wants to be like Sophie. The reader's voices for the characters was not plausible. Not a good story.

Good story, not so good narrator
I love this author and was on a binge listening to all of the available audiobooks by her and really enjoyed them all except for this one. I really tried, started it three times but the narrator was terrible. She has a very lispy voice which makes all of the characters, especially the men, sound really odd and effeminate. Definitely not my favorite which is a shame because the story is good.
