Publisher's summary

When town troublemaker, Louella Drummond, drops dead in front of Isolde Quinn's pet store just minutes after threatening both Issy and her cousin Graeme, the police in the small lakeside town of Silver Hollow assume it's from natural causes.

Until it's discovered that Louella was murdered.

Not just any murder, though. Murder by paranormal means. Dark magic that could only have been performed by a powerful witch. And every law-abiding paranormal knows that dark magic is forbidden and carries strict punishment at the hands of "the committee" - the mysterious entity that provides law and order within the paranormal community.

Being witches, Issy and her three cousins fear they are at the top of the suspect list. To make matters worse, a secret division of the FBI has gotten wind of the happenings in Silver Hollow and sent two agents to ferret out paranormal activity. Even worse than that, Issy is annoyingly attracted to one of them!

Armed with their unconventional posse of familiars, Issy and her cousins dodge the efforts of the police and the special FBI agents while following a twisty path of clues that lead to a shocking betrayal.

A Fun Paranormal Cozy Mystery

Spell of Trouble was a fun and enjoyable listen. The characters were neat and I loved the paranormal community and the special FBPI which was the secret division of the FBI. This story was a light listen, a cozy mystery with nothing heavy. A nice, relaxing way to spend the evening.

One of the reasons I chose to listen to this audiobook was because of Amy Rubinate's narration. I've listened to her one other time and think she's a terrific voice actor. She's awesome and I'd listen to anything she reads.

Fun cozy!

Where does A Spell of Trouble rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was a good audio, the narrator did a great job. I have listened to too many to rank it.

What did you like best about this story?

Witches, I love witch cozies!

Have you listened to any of Amy Rubinate’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to her before and so I knew this was going to be a good listen.

Any additional comments?

Izzy and her family are witches and are not the only paranormals in town, but non-paranormals don't know about them and they like it that way. Then Louella a witch dies and they know another witch did it so they have to be careful. Izzy and her cousin Grey are suspects but didn't do it. Izzy must find out what happened and keep themselves from getting in trouble not only with the police but the Paranormal police as well.

They find out that Louella had taken photos of some rare salamanders that are on some property that is for sale. She might have been going to tell about them which would stop the sale, or it could be because she knew some other things. There could be paranormal or non-paranormals wanting her dead.

A Spell of Trouble was a cute short paranormal cozy mystery and my first by the authors. It has a good mystery and lots of colorful characters. Izzy and her family seem pretty cool and I love cozies with witches as they are always fun ones. :)

Entertaining, but fairly 2-dimensional

Early on, the characters were very 2-dimensional. The author’s language used a sledgehammer to make the reader feel certain ways about certain characters. “I’ll get you, and your family too!” made my eyes hurt from rolling them too hard. But the characters mellowed out and were less stereotypical and became more like real people, with some good, some bad in each. There were gaping loopholes in the story that hurt my brain, but I got this to try during a half-price promo, and feel it was worth what I paid for the entertainment. Not sure if I’ll try the next book.

Great characters, good story

Thoroughly enjoyable, especially for animal lovers and pre-teens. Girls and boys alike in our family got caught up in the story. Issi is a likable main character, and positive role model.

Fun!

What did you love best about A Spell of Trouble?

I liked that Silver Hollow was a town of mostly supernaturals, with a few humans thrown in for fun. Seeing all of the different familiars was particularly fun for me.

What other book might you compare A Spell of Trouble to and why?

Possibly Kristen Painter's Nocturne Falls series, in that it's set in a supernatural community. Honestly, I think Painter's books are a bit better, with more character development, but that's not to say that A Spell of Trouble wasn't very enjoyable.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this book and I'll be downloading the second book in the series.
