Publisher's summary

Angels walk among us, but so do other unearthly beings in this brand-new series by number one New York Times best-selling author Laurell K. Hamilton.

Meet Detective Zaniel Havelock, a man with the special ability to communicate directly with angels. A former trained Angel speaker, he devoted his life to serving both the celestial beings and his fellow humans with his gift, but a terrible betrayal compelled him to leave that life behind. Now he’s a cop who is still working on the side of angels. But where there are angels, there are also demons. There’s no question that there’s evil at work when he’s called in to examine the murder scene of a college student - but is it just the evil that one human being can do to another, or is it something more?

When demonic possession is a possibility, even angelic protection can only go so far. The race is on to stop a killer before he finds his next victim, as Zaniel is forced to confront his own very personal demons, and the past he never truly left behind.

The first in a new series from the author of the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series.

Critic reviews

“Wow! A Terrible Fall of Angels has it all - a terrific new character, devious twists, plenty of action, and one hell of an ending. Brava!” (Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-selling author of Ink and Rage)

Excellent, classy like old Anita Blake Book

I hope for more on this series. Nice! I stopped reading her book after Anita Blake became just too sexually explicit. I hope she doesn't eventually turn this character's "character. I loved that he is married with a son.

all story no erotica

loved it! If you gave up on her after the early Anita Blakes come on back. If you only read erotica this one isn't for you. Great story and I live the characters

A bifurcated life

How can a man who spends days dealing with angels and wiccans and demons and police business be concerned intermittently with an estranged wife who seems to know nothing of his spiritual connections and who really doesn’t seem smart enough or out-of-herself-enough to deserve unabashed adoration.
Hamilton doesn’t a wonderful story of angels and demons. I wish she had kept to that!

Narrator is horrible. Good story

The narrator drove me nuts!!! Way to nasal!! I wanted to tell him to clear his throat or blow his nose. The story was slow at the beginning, but picked up and got interesting. Though, I felt the section about animal totems seemed a little like the tv show “His Dark Materials.”

Great new series

Wonderful world building. This is a great new series. Any series about angels should give respect to them and portray the majesty, pomp and circumstance involving them. Its not a religious tome, but a fun romp. The way the angel space or dimension is described is so vivid I can see it.

The main character is male! He was born with an ability to communicate with angels. He was recruited as a child into the College of the Angels. This is a closed environment for all the gifted to be taught and trained in a dogma of angel communication. It is very cult like and indoctrinates its students into a set way of thinking. They put God in a box of only doing things a certain way and all else is verboten.

The main character was disillusioned as a young adult and left the college. The students live in celibacy. Our main man immediately joined the military after leaving and eventually married and had a child. He is now separated from the wife who is too chickenshit to be a cop’s wife. Her words not kine. But true. He is now a detective with a special unit which takes on supernatural crimes. The unit is made up of witches, voodoo priests, and sundry others. He has had to have an open mind even though he still has his faith.

The current case involves a demon/human hybrid. A human who has been long studying the occult has had a relationship with a demon who posses him in a special way. The two are now one in a new way that hasn’t been seen before. This new way means the hybrid can’t be killed by conventional means. They can’t be separated by usual means.

After some murders, the demon/human hybrid is caught. But it can’t be chased off in usual ways. It travels in a special bottle filled with and coated in a mixture of the human and demon blood. The cop unit tries to contain the bottle in a special box. Afterwards a cop who is a witch ends up with a hand which is like the demons hand. Zanniel the main character enlists the help from the college of angels to both fix the hand and contain the bottle.

The way the resolution happens is interesting and happens at the very end. The first book leaves me wanting more. LKH knows how to captivate with her world building. You don’t have to be a believer and you will have fun. Try it.

WOW, Another Hit for Laurell K. Fans!

Loved this interesting take on all things Angel. Can’t wait to see where the story goes from here. Narration was good, pace was slow but, the story needed time to evolve. Bring on Book Two Already!!

Just okay

The narrator couldn’t seem to keep the same voice between guy characters which made it confusing. Havoc must have ADHD because he couldn’t seem to listen because he would suddenly go into his head and he couldn’t seem to voice simple information to make things less complicated for example when *SPOILERS* the cop dies, if he had communicated with common sense he would have stayed away. I understand that usually Laurell K Hamilton asks a million questions in her books and answers only a few leaving you the reader in a constant state of soap opera land but instead of everyday it’s every couple of years. I didn’t really enjoy Havoc having very little common sense which made me want to yell at the book. Leaving a big cliff hanger at the end of the book made me the reader feel on a raw edge. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone until maybe 3-4 books down the line because then the reader won’t feel as irritated by the lack of knowledge from Havoc with him constantly saying I don’t know.
