Abigail freute sich schon lange auf die Osterferien. Endlich mal keine Schule, endlich mal keine nervigen Lehrer, endlich mal keine Hausaufgaben und lästige Verpflichtungen. Alles was Abigail in den Ferien tun wollte, sich mit Freunden treffen, viel Spaß haben und viel erleben. In einer Stadt wie Sydney kein Problem. Vielleicht konnten sie zusammen an den Strand gehen, sich im Jugendzentrum treffen, ins Kino gehen oder auf Shoppingtour. Möglichkeiten sich zutreffen und gemeinsam zu chillen gab es viele, bestimmt würde es nicht langweilig werden. Die Vorfreude war groß, schon seit Tagen sprachen Abigail und ihre Freunde von nichts anderem mehr. Zwei Wochen Ferien zum Greifen nah, allen zusammen kam das vor wie der Himmel auf Erden.
Auf keinen Fall aber wollte Abigail Zeit mit ihrer Familie verbringen. Immerhin war sie schon 15 und schon fast erwachsen. Ohnehin hatten ihre Eltern nie Zeit für gemeinsame Familienunternehmungen. Der Vater, ein Banker, arbeitete über 50 Stunden in der Woche und kannte auch am Wochenende keine Freizeit. Die Mutter arbeitete Vollzeit als Verkäuferin in einem angesagten Bekleidungsgeschäft und musste ebenfalls fast täglich Überstunden machen. Abigail und ihre kleinere Schwester Kathrina waren nach der Schule meist auf sich gestellt. Kathrina war 13, und in den Augen von Abigail noch ein kleines Kind. So ging jeder der beiden Geschwister nach der Schule seinen eigenen Weg, viel zu sagen hatten sich die beiden nicht. Früher hatten sie noch gemeinsame Interessen und Hobbies, aber im Laufe der Jahre hatten sich die Prioritäten einfach geändert. Kathrina war eine Musterschülerin und eine perfekte Vorzeigetochter, Abigail hingegen hatte nur noch wenig Lust auf Schule und rebellierte gegen jede Regel und jedes Wort ihrer Eltern.
Umso mehr freute sich Abigail auf die lang ersehnten Ferien. Noch drei Tage, dann sollte es endlich so weit sein. Doch dann passierte, womit Abigail nie im Leben gerechnet hatte. Gerade als sie abends wie so oft noch mit ihren Freunden in die Stadt wollte, trommelte die Mutter ihre Töchter zusammen, um den beiden etwas Wichtiges mitzuteilen. "Meine Lieben", sagte sie, “Euer Vater und ich können in euren Ferien leider keinen Urlaub machen. Da wir aber wollen, dass jemand auf euch aufpasst und ihr eure Zeit sinnvoll nutzt, haben wir euch zu den Reiterferien auf dem Hof der Familie Webster angemeldet“. Abigail war, als würde sie der Blitz treffen. Kathrina hingegen strahlte über das ganze Gesicht und fiel ihrer Mutter um den Hals. Als Kinder hatten die beiden Geschwister zwei Ferien auf dem Hof der Websters verbracht. Und ja, früher einmal liebte Abigail Pferde und das Reiten, früher, als sie noch ein Kind war. Seit drei Jahren hatte sie auf keinem Pferd mehr gesessen, kein Interesse mehr an Pferden gehabt, und jetzt das? Abigail konnte es nicht glauben. Kathrina freute sich, sie war nach wie vor noch eine begeisterte Reiterin und ging regelmäßig zu ihren Reitstunden. Aber in den Augen von Abigail war Kathrina ja auch noch ein kleines Mädchen, sie hingegen war schon fast erwachsen. Was um alles in der Welt sollte sie also auf dem Reiterhof? Mit einem lauten "Nein Mama, nie im Leben!“, verließ Abigail das Wohnzimmer, lief in ihr Zimmer und knallte die Tür hinter sich zu. Früher fand sie den Reiterhof der Websters schön, aufregend und spannend, aber heute? Weit weg von der Stadt, fast schon außerhalb der Zivilisation, lag der Reiterhof der Familie, außer der Familie, einem Auto und einem alten Traktor und eben den Pferden gab es hier nichts. Warum wollten ihre Eltern ihr das nur antun? Sie hatte sich doch schon so auf die Ferien gefreut. Und ihre Pläne passten so gar nicht mit denen ihrer Eltern zusammen. War es, weil sie in den letzten Wochen und Monaten so schlecht in der Schule geworden war? Oder weil sie immer nur das tat, worauf sie Lust hatte? Abigail verstand die Welt nicht mehr. Sie fühlte sich verraten und missverstanden.
