Must-Read Series for any Fan of LitRPG or Fantasy!
This final book of the Accidental Champion book is full-on action from the moment you pick it up. Cari and the Princess find themselves betrayed, some of the Raiders of the island having grown tired of everything, and deciding to turn the Princess in. Some Raiders remain loyal though, and with their help, Cari, the Princess and the rest of her Group, get away onto the mainland.
It is here, that Cari finds the real truth, and just how much of a predicament she is truly in, as there are Dukes men everywhere. Left with little choice, the group run into some unexpected assistance (This is kind of one of the funny bits of the book, although at the same time, it has some full-on action scenes as well!)
Whilst this is happening, they learn that Empress Kareena has passed on from old age, and that now, unless they can get Princess Jaycee back in time to be crowned, Prince Timron will be made Emperor, or puppet of the Duke, and it suddenly becomes a race against time.
After this, Cari and the Princess, as well as some of her Loyal Crew, must make a perilous quest deep into the mountains, as there is only one way to get back to the City in time to get Jaycee crowned.
It is not long after they set off, the Cari tells Jaycee, and she makes her a loyal protector – and thus we get the title of this book, as Cari becomes a Royal Dragoon, Protector of the Empress.
This makes up a large part of the story, and is an intriguing journey, as we learn a lot of really interesting stuff about Fantasma, not just those that lived under the Mountains (and Davis does a brilliant job of not just turning this into a ‘Lord of the Rings’ type thing with great Dwarven Halls etc that has been done so many times before. Even though there is an underground section, (no real spoilers), he hasn’t just done the standard ‘Template’, but he has created a story that is uniquely his own, and a lot of fun!),
As I said, Davis has made it so that you learn about Fantasma, and its history, not only expanding on the world building, but doing it in a way that is interesting to the reader, as it is relevant to the story, and was really well told.
There is also several other aspects of the story, relating to the other Dragoons and their missions to save the Empress, the Kingdom, aiding Cari, and of course, there is the story surrounding the return of Hal Dix and his wife Mona.
It was rather interesting having Hal back in the story, having had the previous 3 stories of Hal, and all his incredible adventures, but they sort of get lost in the background of the ‘Legendary Cari Dix’, as she cuts a swathe through the Dukes Men doing one heroic thing after another. Especially being the ‘Dread Pirate Cari’, which her Father was very amused at, given the obvious cultural reference.
However, Mum and Dad are also terrified about how their Daughter is coping, is she ok, and has anything bad happened to her, knowing what Hal went through and the impact, both mentally and physically, it had on him. It is really well done, as there is a lot of introspection on various different things, such as the violent actions they have had to take, even though they were in self-defence, taking a life still has an effect on you. Taking hundreds can have a much more profound effect, especially when a lot of them are in close combat. The gritty, realistic and brutal nature of the combat, and its impact on Cari has not been hidden, nor has the impact on Hal, and it is really good that The Author has made sure to face these issues openly. Hal admits to suffering from severe PTSD on his return, and needing help, and there is concern Cari will need similar assistance.
(Having dealt with PTSD from the Police – it’s at this point I should say, if you have any issues, get some help, there are people out there to help you, if you need to talk, PM me – PTSD is serious, but you are not alone)
As with each of the other books, the character work has again been exceptional. You can not only relate to Cari, really understand her, but as an intelligent young woman with an attitude, I know exactly how she acts, as I have one (a 15yr old Daughter going on 30 LOL). What is really great though, is the character growth, and how she goes from being the angry youth, to this mature, confident, and intelligent Woman. It not only affects her personality, but her fighting style as well, how she wields her sword, and the skill she shows with it as she grows. Cari learns a lot of valuable lessons, not just about how to kill, but about how not to kill, how to be a better diplomat. It is intriguing watching her character development, and it has made for an extraordinary story.
The other exceptional Character of course is Hal. It was (as I said before), fascinating having Hal back in the story, but his character has changed. Not able to draw as much magic as previously, and being a bit older now, Hal is not quite the same as once was, but what he might have dropped in speed or strength, he has gained in knowledge and maturity.
Hal is a real leader on his return, and it is fascinating watching the changes in his character – Davis is such a clever Author.
For those that love LitRPG, this has those elements, there is great character development, I have found that the mechanism that Davis has used to operate his LitRPG is on the one hand informative, gives great insight into the character, their development, attributes, skills and leveling up – all the stuff that makes LitRPG the fun thing it is – but at the same time, it is not lost in it, or overwhelmed by it – Davis has really found a great mix. He has also managed to combine the LitRPG elements into the actual story, so that the characters are a part of it to (Hal listening to the strange dice noise as he uses his luck, and things of this nature). Davis has made the LitRPG elements an exciting part of this story, rather than just an element of the story, it is very clever.
This is a brilliant end to what has been an exceptional series, and if you like Fantasy, LitRPG, or just a great action read, you will love this Series, not just these 3 books, but the original 3 to – this is a must read for any fan of LitRPG or Fantasy!!
Stacey Gonzalez does an outstanding job with the Narration, she has the perfect voice for Cari Dix, able to produce a very nice voice for a young woman, but she is also able to produce that gritty, sarcastic, ‘In Your Face!’ voice that seems to be a go to for Cari so often, as well as her passive aggressive voice. She captures all of these emotions so well, really allowing you to understand and bond with the character. This gives you so much more interest in the story when you have that strong bond with the main character, as you are invested in what happens to them. The great thing about this Narrator is that she can do this for most of the Characters, male or female, Human, Elf, Ogre, Troll, Orc, she creates these wonderful voices with such compelling emotions, you get so absorbed in the story, and completely invested in what happens to each of them. Gonzalez is an extraordinary Narrator, and well worth listening to, easily making this a series you want to listen to rather than read.

Great premise and system
Certain powers were forgotten, the scale of power was reset a few times so that was weird. Cari never multiclassed but also never capped in level at 11 like her dad?

The Vengeance had done its duty and served them well. Dread Raider Cari had crippled four ships and damaged another two. There was no shame in a fight like that. During the fierce battle, Cari’s men rescued J.C., a young girl who is believed to be the true Lost Princess. Now it was Cari’s mission to return J.C. home to her great-grandmother, the Empress. Beyond all expectations, Cari, J.C., and her remaining crew were rescued by the Raider Captain Crandell. Meanwhile, Hal and Mona arrived in Camden looking for Cari. Despite accounts from the Duke’s men of Cari’s demise, they knew Cari was alive. With the Imperial Navy after them, Cari was having difficulty getting back to Crystal City, good thing she had friends. Would Cari complete her mission to return J.C. to Crystal City and her rightful throne? Would Cari’s parents join her to return home? The final episode is exciting and rewarding. People voicing negative reviews do not recognize the growth in Cari and her accomplishments in being the Captain of a warship, her determination, and the loyalty she commanded from her crew. Perhaps those folks didn’t finish the tale. I found this to be a wonderful story. The narrator, Stacy Gonzolez was brilliant.

Why?
It was a good book overall. Why oh why did they make her nearly useless as soon as her parents entered the picture. She is the MC and as soon as her parent showed up her achievements among other things were for lack of better terminology she became nothing more than a character you forget about after the MC leaves the area.
