Publisher's summary

Neighborhood tensions reach a breaking point in the finale of New York Times best-selling author Mary Monroe's captivating series that sweeps listeners back to 1930's Alabama and into the lives of two neighboring couples whose deceitful friendships and imperfect marriages are just the beginning of their troubles...

In this captivating Depression-era set novel by New York Times best-selling author Mary Monroe, two couples find their grudges endangering more than their Alabama small town's deceptive peace...

When good-time couple Milton and Yvonne Hamilton moved one house over from the respectable-but-restless Odell and Joyce Watson, it was a fast friendship of shared secrets - and secret jealousies and betrayals. Their alliance was bound to crash and burn, but the Hamiltons won't quite let the flame die out, even after scandalous accusations get them arrested...

Odell would do anything to be free of his bootlegging, blackmailing, money extorting neighbors and recover the peaceful - and financially prosperous - life he and Joyce once had. But Milton and Yvonne seem to always bounce back from bad luck, and this time they've returned angrier, and greedier, than ever. Determined to get what Odell "owes" them, the Hamiltons have a big surprise for Joyce too, one that shows how far they will go to get revenge...

Now pushed past his breaking point, Odell is sure he's got a foolproof plan to end the scheming once and for all. But it soon spirals into lies, shattering violence, and permanent damage that will roil their tranquil community, and alter his and Joyce's world forever...

Slow burn

The narrator was truly amazing, switching back and forth between male and female characters. Great accents, great pace. Nicely done! The story, on the other hand, was slow. The nickeling, diming, and conniving was in nauseating detail. And I know they're poor and uneducated, but the repeated use of "
conversating" grated on my last nerve.

Great Ending ??

Great ending?? however I can still see a continuing story with the main character Joyce and a conflict between her Betty Jean and her kids. As well as a conflict between Milton’s wife Child and Joyce.

Took Me By Surprise

Overall, good series! Book #2 seemed to be a little long winded to me, but this finale was pretty steady. The storyline and lessons were loud and clear. The way that Joyce talked with those high pitches after every other sentence was something else.
I would recommend Ms. Mary Monroe

great read!!

this book was so good. the second one was drawn out too long but this one brought it home. I don't feel the least bit for nary character. Joyce bc she bragged about her "perfect marriage" or evvone and Milton bc they got too greedy and especially Odell bc he was living 2 lives. I'm glad everyone got theirs at the end

The accents didn't match.

The female reader sounded like she was from Alabama but the male reader sounded like he was from the north. Other than that, a good comeuppance for everyone! 😉
