Publisher's summary

Wrong crew. Wrong ship. Right captain.

Idealistic navy Lieutenant Jacob Grimm just wanted to honor his mother's sacrifice in the last great war. When he's forced to return fire and destroy a squadron of ships to save his own, he thinks he's the hero....

Until they discover the ships are full of children.

Disgraced and denied promotion, Jacob's career is over. That is until the head of ONI needs a disposable officer to command a battered destroyer on the rim.

There's just one problem: Interceptor hasn't had a CO in months, and the ship is a mess. Worse, the system he's assigned to is corrupt and on the verge of all-out civil war with the Alliance.

However, no one told Jacob he was disposable.

Pirates, smugglers, and Caliphate spies complicate the situation, and one captain with an old ship can't enforce the law, let alone stop anyone.

The single greatest discovery of all time is about to change intergalactic politics forever. If Jacob doesn't find a way to succeed, then it won't just be the end of the Alliance, it will be the end of freedom for humanity.

From USA Today best-selling author Jeffery H. Haskell comes a military science-fiction epic in the tradition of Honor Harrington and Star Trek. If you love heroes and starships, you will love to stand with Commander Jacob T. Grimm against all odds. You're in the navy now!

Wonderful book! I ❤ every minute of it...

What a wonderful MilitaryScifi drama. Against all Odds is a fast paced full out adventure! It is guaranteed to keep you on the edge-of-your-seat throughout the entire book! This is the story of how Jacob Grimm's first military action, and what should've been his triumph became his shame, and why he was reassigned to a broken down ship. A political posting in order to make him a scapegoat, just in case everything went to hell! The politicians would already have their sox-puppet in place, so they could play out the blame game. However Jacob Grimm had other plans. He was determined to serve out his remaining time in the military, to the best of his ability and with dignity! And boyo, believe me when I say, all the odds were against him!!!
Despite the military aspect, this really reminded me of Nathan Lowell's work in the Solar Clipper series. It even has pirates! But mostly it really reminded me of the main character, of Ishmael Wang as he steps onto the Agamemnon for the first time, the worst ship in the fleet, and then has to work hard wrestling his crew into shape! And the similarities don't stop there! but I'm not telling you any more, you'll just hafta grab book to find out!
And man, Peter Berkrot's narration is exemplary!

Neck and neck with Expeditionary Force series!

Addicted immediately! Well written with an excellent performance, for fans of the genre, look no further!

Good story well told.

The writing was quite good. I found the characters engaging. The plot was believable enough. No giant holes or blatant cheating.

P.S. Thanks to the guy who down voted the story claiming it was political and racist. Every time someone like that hates a story, chances are I will love it.

For the record, I found it neither. Like I said in the title, just a good story well told.

Not bad at all

My only complaint is the narrator at times going between voices. Other than that, I recommend it.

Sign me up for the next one.

The LT is a little too perfect and I can see that pulling me out of the story in the future. Otherwise, I am fully engrossed in this series and can't wait for a second installment.

Good military sci-fi

Good Military sci-fi. It was an easy listen with a very linear plot and no real surprises. But it was well written and engaging and avoided anything super stupid that sometimes plagues these type stories. The 'worlds' political story could use some work (Really, United Systems Alliance (USA) versus evil Space Muslims) but it is no worse than other major books that pick other 'popular' bad guys to beat up on (Evil space CEO's ring a bell?)

Political intrigue on the fringe of civilised space

I’ve gotten several space operas under my belt in the last several years. I found this tome to be intelligently crafted, true to its roots in military tradition, spacefaring adventure, and just plain FUN! - what a great adventure and rise from the ashes start to a new series … it was hard not to listen almost straight through - I’m already looking forward to the next installment! All around a real honest to goodness hidden gem and well worth a monthly credit!

A love letter to fellow service members

I’ve read military sci-fi since the early 90s. This book is among the finest in its class that I’ve encountered. TEven though set in space, it is thoroughly grounded with a modern military vibe. The story believably portrays the day-to-day life of a futuristic warship crew, taking time to develop the characters and their relationships. The action scenes grip all the more for this treatment. As an Army officer, I found myself thinking time and again how I might have handled each situation the crew did. Bravo to Jeffery for keeping my interest start to finish despite my notoriously short attention span.

Against All Odds

Not my usual genre but I really loved this action-packed military Sci-Fi book. I'll be picking up to read other Jeffery Haskell's books while anxiously awaiting the next addition of the Grimm's War series. Peter Berkrot's narration was spot on.
