Publisher's summary

Nearly every American knows someone who has been affected by the opioid crisis. Addiction is a trans-partisan issue that impacts individuals from every walk of life. Millions of Americans are tired of watching their loved ones die while politicians ignore this issue. Where is the solution? Where is the hope? Where's the outrage?

Ryan Hampton is a young man who has made addiction and recovery reform his life's mission. Through the wildly successful non-profit organization Facing Addiction, Hampton has been rocketed to the center of America’s rising recovery movement - quickly emerging as the de facto leader of the national conversation on addiction. He understands firsthand how easy it is to develop a dependency on opioids, and how destructive it can quickly become. Now, he is waging a permanent campaign to change our way of thinking about and addressing addiction in this country.

In American Fix, Hampton describes his personal struggle with addiction, outlines the challenges that the recovery movement currently faces, and offers a concrete, comprehensive plan of action towards making America’s addiction crisis a thing of the past.

“The opioid crisis affects so many all across America - I’m proud that Ryan found help and is now helping others.” (President Bill Clinton)

"As someone who has experienced the problem of addiction from both sides, both as President Obama’s drug czar and as a person in long term recovery myself, I'm able to attest to our woefully inadequate system of treatment, criminal justice and rehabilitation. Ryan Hampton’s book is a powerful and timely contribution to understanding the dimensions of this crisis - and what we can do about it." (Michael Botticelli, White House drug czar, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President Obama)

VERY good; not perfect.

The author gives a good description of how we got here and some paths we must take to get us out of the mess we are in. All of those are good recommendations; taken together, they would heal a lot of the damage that has happened.
Unfortunately, he spends quite a bit of time promoting long-term "rehab" facilities which usually provide care for 28 days and then NOTHING. (He actually proposes extending the coverage to 90 days!) These systems cost tens of thousands of dollars every month for every patient, and by themselves they accomplish almost nothing for moderate-to-severe addiction to opiates.
On the other hand, he gives little more than passing mention of medication-assisted-treatment which is the generally acknowledged medical standard of care for long-term maintenance treatment for serious opioid addiction.
The author could also give some attention to addiction to tobacco and nicotine.

Fantastic

Loved this book so much. Every single person that doesn't understand addiction or substance use disorders should read or listen to this book. it had reignited my fire to want to change my community. As a nurse my heart already aches for those that suffer for this horrible disease. This makes it hurt worse hearing the further hurt and depression, struggles and financial woes for those that want to better themselves but are stopped at every avenue they try. So much love for writing and putting this into perspective for others to see Ryan!

An important message muddled with his politics. Unfortunate.

Some great parts. Pure passion and brings forth a number of good points regarding the opioid crisis, BUT it desperately needs editing. And it would have been more enjoyable with an experienced narrator. The constant preachy tone mixed with his political agenda had me begging for it to end. I had to listen on a faster speed to make it to the end, without never wanting to vote again.

Ryan Hampton nailed it!

As the mother of a son who struggled with opioid substance abuse for 10 years, I've compiled my own list of what has to happen in this country in order to stop this epidemic and the stigma that rides along with it. Ryan Hampton and I see eye-to-eye on all accounts. This book is raw and honest, which is what we need in this fight. My son lost his battle in November of 2018. Every man, woman and child needs to read this book. Don't be naive enough to think this epidemic doesn't impact your life. It's here and it's coming for every one of us unless we heed Ryan's advice.

Real as real gets and a true path forward

This book is so well thought out. A mixture of real, personal grit and analysis of policy with a clear path forward. The authors performance on this audio book is so emotional, because this public health crisis is maddening. You will be glad you read/listened to this book.

Absolutely Amazing Book.

This Beek is one of the BEST I have listened too in a very very long time. It's honest, it's full of factual events, laws & it certainly 100% does NOT "sugar-coat" anything that has to do with opioids, this epidemic. It's full of some of the best wrighting on this subject, one that has been around for an extremely long time... And doesn't seem "powers that" have the real issues. They need to talk about it. Like, everywhere I go I'd say 8 out of 10 people wanna hear what I have to say. And more often than not they have been effected but this disease. I actually just bought this book in "book form" because I wanted it so I can read it whenever I want to. I very highly recommend this book for ANYONE who has been effected by addiction.

A must read!

Ryan does a wonderful job narrating his book. I am a person in recovery and in the Public Health field. I thought I knew a lot about addiction in the US but I learned so much from this book! I recommend it to those in recovery and those seeking to understand the opioid epidemic. Ryan offers real solutions and hope! Inspiring!
