About this listen
What does it mean to save yourself?
Nina Idi - a third child in a society where families are allowed only two children - has been betrayed by the boy she loved and arrested by the Population Police for exposing other alleged third children. Angry and confused, Nina knows only one thing for sure: She is innocent of the charges. I read this as a teen and enjoyed it just as much if not more as an adult. This book is from a different characters perspective and I still found myself enjoying it just as much.

Not just for young adults 😊
I am enjoying this series of books. I’m an adult & wanted something easier to listen to before going back into a complicated & much longer book.
I listened to Ms Haddix’s series of
The Missing & thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw her 1st book in Among The Hidden & didn’t realize it was a series. I wanted to know what happened with Luke. I found the others in the series & purchase 3 more. I’ll get the entire series. I’ll look into other series of hers also. It also gives me something to suggest to parents for their children. I’ve worked in early childhood education & know sometimes parents need a little help, especially during this pandemic.

Compelling conflict, fast paced narrative
The world of the Population Police is further revealed and we get to see the story through a new narrator. Trust, betrayal and survival drive our characters in a fast paced tale of the Shadow Children. The story gets more intricate and the possibilities more intriguing.

Great read
Loved each book of the series
The series ended differently than expected and that’s a nice surprise! This was my favorite series as a young 90s kid in 6th grade.. I wasn’t able to source the rest of the series in later years, after it was written. Grew up pretty poor. What a delight to read-read and finish the entire series for free on Audible!! (A friend recently gifted me the entire set in paperback too!) Now, I’m going and reading all the other Haddix books on Audible! I’m 32 and it’s made my whole month already to finish this series!

Develops Young Minds
This entire series of books is great for helping develop young minds so that they can understand politics a bit more. The book series is set in a fictional dystopian society, but in many ways it mirrors our own society. I enjoyed reading it again for the first time since I read it as a kid. I still loved it, and I'm 28.
