About this listen

Amygdala is a story of animals, born to a world of swirling, fractal chaos, who learned the art of civilization. Their government was forged in fire, ruled only by the objective truth of all things, with no room for incompetence, mercy, or even morality. Their city, 'The Underbirth', holds within it the greatest collection of animal minds, born of mechanical systems designed to test everything: natural, cultural, industrial selection. Their art is beguiling, their science boundless, their bodies strong and lean and perfect.

And yet, amidst the beauty of a culture ruled by absolute competence, some begin to ask: what is the cost of civilization? When do animals stop being animals? Is there another way?

The characters designs, and the interesting plot.

I'm a sucker for a good story about differing approaches to life, philosophy, and politics.

I enjoyed the book.

There’s a lot to like in the book the world, the characters and the mechanics of their existence. However, I do feel the could’ve used a little bit more depth but that could be it is his first book

Awesome Story/Music is a bit too much...

This story is amazing! I truly adored almost every minute of it.
My only complaint being the music, although beautiful and lovely compositions, tends to be very repetitive in some of the later chapters and thus, VERY distracting.
The songs sung by the characters (Harlow, Dreamweaver, etc...) are incredible and very appropriate in placement. It was mainly the drawn out compositions at the end of certain chapters or the, for lack of a proper term, fluff music. Music that seems to be present and repeated just to extend time with a chapter. That music did become very distracting and drew too much from the story itself. I admit to skipping to the next chapter just to get away from it.
Beyond that musical nitpick, this was an incredible listen and well written story.
Good job Fennah family! You should all be very proud!

A Unique and Complex Story

A wonderful, thought provoking story that challenges our preconceptions and morality. Ever since I got the physical book last year, my vision and thoughts on the world have been changed ever since, and my creative spark has been reignited. I cannot wait for the next book!

Loved it to much I bought it three times.

This is by far in a way my favorite piece of fiction I've ever read (and listened to, as the audiobook is also exceptional.) With a huge cast of characters, all of which who are incredibly distinct and individual, and a thrilling and dramatic story, it really checks all my boxes. So much has been dutifully set up for the next book in the series, and I can hardly wait for the next installment. If you like cool original characters and layered stories involving themes of life, death, love, and the inevitability of struggle as is the nature of being alive, you will love this book. The themes are handled with great skill and care. Sam Fennah is an incredible writer, with vivid and mindbending descriptions of the incredible world in which these animals live. With the extracurricular value of the animations on his YouTube channel which illustrate the characters and their world, it's one of the most vibrant fantasy worlds I've ever experienced. This book will live rent free in my mind forever.

The music is so unique

Some of the voices were quite odd but that didn’t hurt my experience at all
