About this listen
Gilman James comes home from Iraq - the last of three childhood friends to return. His brothers-in-arms are mere shadows of their former selves - Gil, unmarked, determines to take care of them. But how far should a man go for the people he loves?
Stepping across the line between right and wrong, Gil finds himself stranded in the Texan desert - as a bank heist he's planned goes horribly wrong. Pursued into the badlands by US Marshal John Whicher, a moment of violent reckoning is set in train.
What makes an outlaw? Marshal John Whicher thinks he knows. But can natural justice ever outrank the law?

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Narrator's voice appropriate for this story
This is the first audio book I have listened to. I enjoyed it and the narrator's voice was appropriate for the story. His voice is deep with a Texas accent. He spoke slowly but fast enough to keep the story rolling along. I could understand who was talking when there were conversations. This audio book was very relaxing to listen to. This is an interesting story set in Texas desert country.

An Excellent Audio of this Thriller !
An excellent audio of this thriller with a great plot, fantastic characters, and a wonderful location. The story is well told, fast paced, and holds the reader's attention. A real page turner with unique dialog. I highly recommend both the ebook and the audio version of this story.
I received a copy of the audio from the author and chose to write this review. Purchased the ebook for my collection.

Protagonist?
The Whicher character, series namesake, was not developed well at all, and the moral ambiguity he felt about Gil et al was more inconsistent than ambiguous
The Gil character was far more interesting but I had a hard time with the justification for his actions—lots of people go to war, not many use bank robbing for justice or redemption
The performance was above average but rather emotionally flat, even considering the main characters were even keeled by description
But the Texas background was great, as were the action sequences and gun detail
I’m ambivalent about trying the 2nd Whicher book —any help on whether I should try it?

Would it be better with a different narrator ?
I was excited to start this new series.. HOWEVER the guy narrating it, J. Rodney Turner puts me to sleep. Don't get me wrong he has a great voice but it's way too slow. I wonder if I was listening to a Louis L’Amour book it would be better. I assume John Stonehouse wanted a country sounding narrator to go with his new hero but he may have gone a little too far. I was a Motor Officer in Austin for 11 out of my first 13 years with the PD. The first time I was at a bad collision and was interviewed by the local news I was very excited. Then I watched the news that evening and sounded just like J. Rodney Turner.. I vowed from that point on to avoid the TV media. I'm a little torn about getting the 2nd book in the series.. I want to give him another shot but..

A great listen and a great story!
I enjoyed this book very much. The story was interesting and the characters and their flaws were well written. I loved the narrator. He did a fantastic job bringing this story to life. It kept me guessing as to how it would end.

Excellent "Manhunt" story ... but...
Fine story of a West Texas "Manhunt" with a Bonnie & Clyde element ... and a Marine Vet reentering society dilemma ...
The gravel-voiced narrator was perfect for the characters ... EXCEPT he used the Exact Same Voice for both The Marshall & Gillman James so it was often impossible to tell who was talking... whose thoughts were we hearing ???

Can't get enough of this series.
I don't write many reviews. Only if, I truly get into a book.
Love the narrator, the deep, West Texas sound. It takes me right back to Texas. I prefer to listen to the audio. My eyes are not what they used to be. I own all the books in this series, wish they were all in audio with this narrator.
