About this listen
Every weekend, 10-year-old Josie would walk the two miles out of town to the local Amish community, where she would spend all day until sunset getting to know everyone there and helping out as best she could.
She was enthralled with their way of life, their customs, their language, and the devout ways they held. What she most loved about them was their fairness in everything and how all they did revolved around their faith in God.
The community elders were never that happy to see an Englischer in the village, but they tolerated her trying to win them over with over politeness and her boundless courtesy and enthusiasm.
Over time she made friends with young and old alike, but as she started to spend more and more time there, her own family assumed that she was being encouraged against her wishes to be there all the time. Her best Amish friend was a young girl about her age named Mary, and she was very upset when Josie was no longer allowed to visit, knowing that her own community would not allow her to go and visit Josie, either. Tension grew between the family and the community, and the family denied her permission to go near the village, which devastated Josie. When a serious health issue causes concern, action needs to be taken.
Will the family come around to see sense?
Will the Amish reach out in kindness or shut the door on the situation?
Contains a few Amish words and phrasing.
Another great story from this prolific author of Amish romance and mystery.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Story
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.
