About this listen
A stunning, inspiring new novel from Abi Daré, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl with the Louding Voice
When Tia accidentally overhears a whispered conversation between her mother—terminally ill and lying in a hospital bed in Port Harcourt, Nigeria—and her aunt, the repercussions will send her on a desperate quest to uncover a secret her mother has been hiding for nearly two decades.
Back home in Lagos a few days later, Adunni, a plucky fourteen-year-old runaway, is lying awake in Tia’s guest room. Having escaped from her rural village in a desperate bid to seek a better future, she’s finally found refuge with Tia, who has helped her enroll in school. It’s always been Adunni’s dream to get an education, and she’s bursting with excitement.
Suddenly, there’s a horrible knocking at the front gate. . . .
It’s only the beginning of a harrowing ordeal that will see Tia forced to make a terrible choice between protecting Adunni or finally learning the truth behind the secret her mother has hidden from her. And Adunni will learn that her “louding voice,” as she calls it, is more important than ever, as she must advocate to save not only herself but all the young women of her home village, Ikati.
If she succeeds, she may transform Ikati into a place where girls are allowed to claim the bright futures they deserve—and shout their stories to the world.

Story
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

An up-and-coming cookbook editor at a London publishing house, she’s got lovely, loyal friends and a handsome fiancé, Kit, whose rarefied family she actually, most of the time, likes, despite their upper-class eccentricities. One of the many, many things Kit loves about Piglet is the delicious, unfathomably elaborate meals she’s always cooking.

My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Colossally.

In the ancient city of Nineveh, on the bank of the River Tigris, King Ashurbanipal of Mesopotamia, erudite but ruthless, built a great library that would crumble with the end of his reign. From its ruins, however, emerged a poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, that would infuse the existence of two rivers and bind together three lives. In 1840 London, Arthur is born beside the stinking, sewage-filled River Thames. In 1989, Ben Spencer, a twenty-two-year-old Black man from Dallas, was convicted of murdering white businessman Jeffrey Young—a crime he didn’t commit. From the day of his arrest, Spencer insisted that it was “an awful mistake.” The Texas legal system didn’t see it that way. It allowed shoddy police work, paid witnesses, and prosecutorial misconduct to convict Spencer of murder, and it ignored later efforts to correct this error. The state’s bureaucratic intransigence caused Spencer to spend more than half his life in prison.

Al Ward lives on an isolated mining claim in the high desert of central Nevada fifty miles from the nearest town. A grizzled man in his sixties, he survives on canned soup, instant coffee, and memories of his ex-wife, friends and family he’s lost, and his life as a touring musician. I’m not okay - no words to say how much I loved this
I count Girl with the Louding Voice as one of my all-time favorite audio books. When I found out there was a sequel, I immediately downloaded it. The second I heard Adunni’s voice again, I smiled.
I can’t tell you how much I love this story. I laughed, I cried, I laughed some more, and I bawled. I really hope we get another one installment to the story. Without giving spoilers, I think we will.
Thank you for an amazing story with an even better narration.

Important Issues Addressed
Just like The Girl With The Louding Voice, this is a beautiful story that is well told by the same performer. Her many voices and accents/dialects really makes you feel as though you are listening to a multi cast narration. As for the writing, it shines a light on several serious issues of harsh treatment for girls in small villages, and truly brought tears to my eyes when listening. It’s necessary that we learn how life still is in other parts of the world, and help to create change through education and hard work. Definitely get this audiobook, but be aware that it is sometimes difficult to fully understand parts that are said because of the strong accent and lack of context. ENJOY!

And So I Roar. . . Sequel to “The Girl With the Louding Voice” Wonderful!!!
I loved “Tbe Girl with the Louding Voice” and was searching for something else with same feel. Imagine my surprise when I learned the sequel had just been released and was narrated by the same reader! I enjoyed every minute!

Eye opening view into imbalanced value of human life in Nigeria
Loved how everything came together over the hours of listening. Some loose ends kept me guessing. Generally all characters were more intelligent and in touch with their feelings than expected in any society for this story to have felt real. I would have loved it more if it was less sappy.

Female courage
The characters and the cultural customs are powerful. It is important to examine what needs to be changed in all cultures.
