About this listen

The end of the world? That’s the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters and deep philosophical exercises in school. No need to sweat it. So when 16-year-old Tess’ doomsday-dad builds a bomb shelter in their suburban backyard, everyone thinks he’s gone crazy—until fire rains down from the sky, sinking whole cities into colossal craters and setting much of the world ablaze.

Tess’ dad gives her a few short minutes to gather her emergency bag and her freaked-out kitten, then leads her outside and into the underground shelter. Terrified, the last thing she expects is for him to leave her there all alone, but he has no choice—he must find her missing brother.

Before leaving, he makes Tess promise to keep the hatch door shut, not to open it for anyone but him, and to stay put until he returns. But he forgot to tell her one thing: What is she supposed to do if he never comes back?

Can't wait to read the next one!

Teenager survives apocalypse and attempts to find missing family members. Sounds like an interesting story, right? This was so much more than that but I don't want to spoil anything. Tess is 16, almost 17, when things go awry. The narrator captured a teenage voice perfectly with touches of sarcasm when it was called for. Small descriptive details add depth and color throughout the book. I'm diving immediately into the next book.

Brought to life by a gifted narrator!

I’m a sucker for a good apocalypse, it’s true! And an apocalypse that includes a cat- ya got me right there! This is a lovely YA novel with a compelling, well developed teen girl at its heart. And a cat. Did I mention the cat? The narration by Shannon Nicole Locke is what really brought this YA book alive to this not-so-young-adult reader, however. I was totally drawn in to this character’s world by the combination of Ms. Scott’s words and Ms. Locke’s obvious talent. I actually cried at the end- and then immediately downloaded the next book in the series! I will definitely be searching for more books written by this author AND more books narrated by this extraordinarily talented actor.

A Different Twist on the Apocalypse

I really enjoyed this different twist on the Apocalypse story. It has a cliffhanger ending as many questions are left unanswered but I am excited to listen to the next book in the series to get some answers. Great narrator too!

Uniquely horrifying and thought provoking !

Tess did what her father told her, she stayed in the bomb shelter and waited for him to come back with her brother … but he didn’t. Forced to go out on her own into a word vastly changed, this beautifully written, thought provoking story is at times heart warming, at times heartbreaking, and times horrifying as Tess ventures out searching for her family. The plot is well crafted, with a generous dose of mystery that kept this kept listener enthralled and guessing through the many twists, surprises, and “edge of your seat moments” along the way. This story has also really has made me think. The characters, though few are throughly defined, unique and interesting! The more I got to know them, the more I felt drawn to them! Their dialogue was cleverly written, managing not only to be throughly descriptive, but humorous whenever a “tension breaker” was needed, because after all, in a Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic world, we ALL would need well placed tension breakers, and our author delivered them brilliantly! Speaking of brilliant delivery, the narration bringing these characters, and this story to life was exactly that! Beautifully clear, consistent, engaging and emotionally on point with voicing choices perfectly suited to each character! This was my first listen of this type, but it won’t be my last! I can’t wait for more in this series! Five enthralling stars!

Oh. My. Gosh!

I LOVE this book! And the ending - see the subject line!
I have so many questions and I can hardly wait to hear the answers. The narration was perfection. The story was exciting, mysterious, sad, happy, sweet, heartbreaking - perfection! The idea of having to wait to know the answer to who Cole is makes me fidgety, but in the best possible way. I can hardly wait for book 2!

Made me look forward to rush hour!

I was completely absorbed in this story. My highest praise for an audio book is to look forward to rush hour, cleaning the kitchen, laundry… any task so I could hear more.

Intriguing characters, exciting plotting and great narration.

I can’t wait for the sequel!

Throughly mysterious

I spent the entire book trying to figure out what had happened and truly still don’t know. It’s a real mystery but super fascinating and the back and forth between the two characters is funny and at times irritating but you have to remember one is a teenager. I’m still not sure the other is real! Can’t wait to listen to book two and learn more.
