About this listen

On a dull and dreary October day, Lori Shepherd and her husband set off for a quiet weekend without the kids. But before they go, he must pay a visit to a reclusive client. After Lori drops him off, a storm that's been brewing intensifies, and she ends up stranded in an ancient, rambling inn named for a king's ransom in smuggled goods that passed through the village in ages past.

When Lori begins hearing footsteps and strange noises, Aunt Dimity reminds her that the inn is almost certainly haunted but that not all ghosts are interested in harming the living. But the longer Lori is stuck at the inn, the stranger things seem. Are the noises she hears the spirits of smuggling's past? Or should Lori be more concerned with the living inhabitants of the inn, like the hulking, grizzled cook, an ex-con who seems to be everywhere at once?

Joining forces with her new friend Bishop Smallwood, Lori sets out to discover once and for all who - or what - is haunting the King's Ransom.

Thanks for the new narrator!

It’s a much more pleasant experience listening to the Aunt Dimity stories with a skilled narrator.

The story is pleasant and a mild little mystery without including death or violence. Not the best in the series, but not the worst. There are far more engaging mysteries in the series but Nancy Atherton holds to her principles. I’ll choose a less engaging mystery with a good narrator over a great story with a poor narrator any day.

I love these books!I

I truly enjoy these books. I am a mystery fan, but enjoy the fact that hers don't have to involve a dead body. Ms. Moore narrative makes the stories come alive. I can't hardly wait for the next one.

Worth it’s weight in gold!

Lori’s curiosity once again takes us on a tour of a delightful corner of England as she attempts to solve another puzzling mystery. The wonderful Christina Moore gives lively voice to Nancy Athertons’s engaging characters. A worthy addition to your Aunt Dimity bookshelf.

Wrong genre

This was a pleasant read but it should have been listed under fiction, not mysteries & thrillers. Fortunately, I like stories that are about nice people and include historic references even if they are a bit saccharin. Might please many 'cosy' readers - Probably not for most mystery enthusiasts.

Time for a new series

Pretty slow moving and a bit too cozy. The series has lost its sparkle. Time to try something new.
