Publisher's summary

The world is dead!

Two months ago, billions of people were killed by a deadly germ. Days later, they rose up again in massive numbers. Since then, cities worldwide have become rat-infested, germ-filled hellholes, ruled by the living dead.

Welcome to London

A group of survivors are trapped in the rotting heart of the capital, hopelessly outnumbered. They've heard rumors of a safe haven to the north—a self-sufficient community where people can rebuild their devastated lives—but the decaying ruins of London are vast and sprawling, and they're going to need an army to get away from this place.

There are other people here, waiting in the shadows. Can enough of them band together to make a difference, or has the country—maybe even the entire world—already been lost to the undead?

The first book in a standalone trilogy set in the nightmare world of David Moody's international best-selling Autumn series—the original epic British zombie saga.

Great listen! If you are on the fence… get it!

I was pleasantly surprised with my first experience with Moody’s writing. Great story, characters and the narration was spot on! Solid performance from both author and narrator. Now I need to go check both for my next listen!

different zombies

This story started when the zombie apocalypse happened. The initial story was about a survivor then the other characters emerged. I thought this might be a boring story, but the way it was written and narrated gave the dead story... life ;) Looking forward to reading the next 2 books.

Fans of the Autumn series won’t be disappointed

~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book. ~

I was excited to get my hands on the new addition to the Autumn zombie universe. David Moody was one of my earlier forays into zombie novels. Which means, I’m familiar with the zombie world this story is set in. However, don’t take this to mean that the story assumes you know. In multiple perspectives the early days of the zombiefication are observed. The different reactions to the slow changes of the zombies and the world the survivors found themselves in were varied and realistic. You aren’t following a singular protagonist; rather you get to view the story from different viewpoints and life experiences. You don’t have to have read the previous books, but why not do so if you have time?

David Moody continues to describe the gory reality of this new world with detailed descriptions. The zombies are a fitting horror and the setting of London is a solid setting (advantages and disadvantages are addressed).

The narrator does an amazing job of bringing this story to life. I very much enjoyed listening to this story.

Great Start to This Zombie Trilogy

David Moody delivers a slightly different take on the zombie story, and it’s no less terrifying than the original concept. The dead are walking. Those left alive in London are hiding. Horror ensues. “Dawn” serves up guts, gore, putridness, and crowbar-weilding survivors. Some survivors are ingenious and some not-so-much, but that’s what makes the entire story believable. Action-packed and emotional, fans of the zombie apocalypse genre will find a this book satisfying read.

Narrator Aubrey Parsons more than pulls his weight with his spectacular voice-acting performance. He elevates the book to sterling heights.

Highly recommended.

This one was between a 3 and a 4 for me

Overall the story is decent, there is a lot happening and the London setting is interesting. Saying that, it was more of a 3.5 score for me, so I rounded up the stars to 4.

I think that the main issue that I had with the whole book was that there were too many characters vying for my attention and I couldn't really connect with any of them enough. I often forgot who was who.

What I did like: there was a good mixture of different types of characters, the setting was pretty decent and there was enough tension and action. The actions of the zombies were also interesting and showed that the author had given thought to how the infection worked. Not your straight up zombie crazies but certainly a huge threat to life.

The narration was great, the different tones and accents that Aubrey pulls off are great, really gives you a good idea of how the melting pot in London is like.

Great narrator

I think the narrator made up for the parts of the story that are lacking. This one seemed to have potential, but the perspective kept switching among characters. There may be too many involved in telling the story and just when I became interested in one it would switch to another. Feels a little lacking in substance in that way. Also was confused by the behavior of the zombies. At times it felt unrealistic. The attempts to describe gore were unnecessary for me and it is those very attempts that also made it feel unrealistic. I wanted to like it more than I actually did. Certainly not the worst, but not sure if I will continue with the series.

Nope

I have tried several times and just can’t get in the mood for this book. Partly due to the narrator and partly due to the writing.

Glad that’s over

This was terrible! I usually like his books. Don’t think I’ll get the rest of this series. It was loud and constant arguing amongst the survivors. Exhausting.
