After The Joker’s death, Batman and Gotham City face a mysterious new threat in this direct sequel to Tim Burton’s iconic Batman.

The Joker is dead, but not forgotten. Gotham City is saved, but it is still not safe. By night, its new symbol of hope, Batman, continues his fight to protect the innocent and the powerless. By day, his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, wonders whether there may someday be a future beyond skulking the city’s rooftops or the cavernous halls of his stately manor alongside the ever-dutiful Alfred Pennyworth.

But even after death, the Clown Prince of Crime’s imprint can be seen in more than just the pavement. Remnants from The Joker’s gang are leading wannabes fascinated by his bizarre mystique on a campaign of arson that threatens the city—even as it serves greedy opportunists, including millionaire Max Shreck. And survivors of exposure to The Joker’s chemical weapon Smylex continue to crowd Gotham City’s main hospital.

To quell the chaos, Batman needs more than his cape and his well-stocked Utility Belt. Bruce Wayne is forced into action, prompting a partnership with a charismatic scientist to help solve the health crisis. But as he works in both the shadows and the light, Bruce finds himself drawn deeper into Gotham City’s turmoil than ever before, fueling his obsession to save the city—an obsession that has already driven a wedge between him and Vicki Vale. The loyal Alfred, who had hoped Bruce’s efforts as Batman could help him find closure, finds the opposite happening. Nightmares begin to prompt Bruce to ask new questions about the climactic events in the cathedral, and investigations by Commissioner Gordon and reporter Alexander Knox into the arsons only amplify his concerns.

Having told the people of Gotham City that they’d earned a rest from crime, Batman finds the forces of evil growing ever more organized—and orchestrated—by a sinister hand behind the scenes. The World’s Greatest Detective must solve the greatest mystery of all: Could The Joker have somehow survived? And could he still have the last laugh against the people of Gotham City?

Fantastic. I want more books like this. Any Batman fan should listen you most likely will know the twists and turns of the story as the introduce characters but it is done well.

Good story considering what they had to work with. Wraps up a lot of hanging threads from Batman '89 which was nice. My only (small) complaint is that it kept reminding me about something that happened in one of the Arkham games. Looking forward to the next book in 2025.

Excellent sequel

This was a wonderful addition to the Burtonverse and had it been a sequel film it would have made Batman Returns a wonderful bookend to the trilogy. It sets up that film so well and gives background to so many elements that came through even into the flash crossover, all in all this is a great read with good pacing. It makes the Keaton Batman more real and it highlights more of his detective skills, ingenuity as well as combat abilities under fire.

Fantastic story

The story was well read and story itself was a good continuation of the original Batman.

Well read, great story

Great narrator, good story, really enjoyed this. The author clearly has a love for the comics.

Really good listen

Inserting many of the classic Batman themes from the comics and other movies in the Batman '89 world is awesome. Also the call out to the sequel and introducing other villains is great.

The narration is excellent. The challenge of trying to replicate Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton's performance is too much to ask of any performer but he does a good as possible.

Interesting and Entertaining.

This is the unseen Keaton/Burton Batman film we never got, and it's unfair it'll never exist in live action!

The story captures the vibes of the '89 movie perfectly, featuring surprising cameos, subtle and brilliant references, recurring characters and a thrilling plot that bridges the gaps between the first two films amazingly well. It would be an unfair spoiler to fully reveal the villains used in this, but they worked surprisingly well in the context of this universe to great effect.

Huge credit to the author who clearly did his homework and must be a huge fan of the Tim Burton films and Batman as a whole. And the narrator also does a great job not only capturing the tones of Bruce Wayne AND Batman; I could easily see Michael Keaton performing these lines in my head!

I would absolutely love to see another novel set in this universe, seeing as how this one does not seem to bump into any of the lore explored in the '89 Batman comics or the movies that follow Batman Returns. Otherwise it's easy to consider Batman Resurrection

It's Batman 1.5: Unfairly Great

The story was a great continuation of the 1989 movie. Felt believable within that universe.

Narrator was excellent with switching between voices and accents

The story provided a very interesting and unique telling of one of Batman‘s most well-known villains. It also allowed the reader to envision how this would’ve been portrayed on the big screen had Tim Burton been allowed to make something like this

Continuing Burton’s Batman

I’m looking forward to the next book in this series. Fingers crossed it happens. This felt like a Batman story, unlike the later movies.

A good follow up to the movie.
