Publisher's summary

It's 1980 on Florida's Gulf Coast. Sun, drugs, gambling debts, and dirty deals push navy-prison parolee Scotland Ross deeper into the life of crime he never wanted.

His sister's life, a potential newfound love, and his own freedom are all on the line as he tangles with a redneck gangster intent on becoming the state's next governor.

Will Scotland make the right choice or the one that keeps him alive?

Beachhead is dark noir set in the state of sunshine. A story of crime and loyalty, love and hate, and choices made when everything you care about is on the line.

Great Hard Hitting Noir

Would you consider the audio edition of Beachhead to be better than the print version?

Yes, the guy reading the story was excellent, really caught my attention and never let me go.

What other book might you compare Beachhead to and why?

I'd say it's a mix between a Raymond Chandler novel and Fight Club... great, gutsy, story-telling.

Which scene was your favorite?

I don't want to give too much away, but near the end when Scotland is forced to confront Kinsey, and you don't know what he'll end up doing... man, that had me on the edge of my seat.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me want to read more Scotland Ross stories, that's for sure!

Any additional comments?

If you like dark, gritty tales of flawed heros fighting corrupt power, then this is the story for you. Hess spins a great tale, and I can't wait for him to put out more.

Totally absorbing

Scotland Ross, Jeffery Hess, and Eric G. Dove make this an unforgettable book. Seven months after my first read and listen, the characters, the landscape, the recurring twists in this riveting tale are with me still. Thank you, Jeffery Hess, for bringing these individuals into my world -- their thoughts, dilemmas, entanglements, and actions. Surprising and stunning again and again and disturbing and haunting long after the ending.

Floridian Awesomeness

If you could sum up Beachhead in three words, what would they be?

Vivid, engaging, edgy.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely, very much in the tradition of Elmore Leonard, not a lot of boring fat, just good Florida heat!

Have you listened to any of Eric G. Dove’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. But I do like all things audio--books, podcasts. I think he did a great job.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Because of my schedule, I couldn't listen to it in one sitting--BUT I WANTED TO DO JUST THAT.

Any additional comments?

Jeffery Hess's debut novel is a smartly written, very entertaining read/ listen. The primary thing that impresses me about Jeff's writing is the "voice" in his writing--engaging, edgy, sexy, sad--very fresh noir writing. This is my kind of fiction!
