I liked the survivalist mentality. Didn’t like the younger brother not getting more applause for his journey to escape the situation he was in.

I love this book. I’m sorry it ended so soon and we did not get to find out more about the characters. It left me wanting for more.

If you liked "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver, you will enjoy "Beartooth". I think I would call "Beartooth" the "Demon Copperhead" of the northern Rockies. It is a well written, well plotted story with characters both believable and relatable. Callan WInk does a wonderful job of describing the beauty of the Montana mountains without romanticizing them. Yes, the area is beautiful. But it is also harsh and dangerous while life there can be difficult and draining in many ways. Do give this book a listen. You will come away very much taken with the main characters.
Many years ago, I visited the Beartooth area of Montana. After all this time, I can still recall the beautiful mountain meadows and lakes. People were few and far between. But "Beartooth" has given me insight into and appreciation for both the land and the people who call it home.

The book skipped twice and takes the listner out of the story.
The landscape is amazingly written and reminds me of places I've been lucky enough to have visted.

This is not a "propulsive novel about a heist gone wrong." It's well-written, but the marketing blurb is misleading. The book is more of a meditation on life in wild country and the relationship between 2 brothers. Poetic narrative, but the story just meanders.

Don't expect an exciting heist novel.

This is a bleak story of two brothers from a dysfunctional family trying to eke out a living on their mother’s homestead on the Montana border of Yellowstone National Park. After resorting to desperate, illegal ventures involving poaching and shed antler theft, injury and addiction to pain medication mark further decline of the brothers leading to ominous interaction with their armed, kilt-wearing buyer. A more upbeat-ending brings this relatively short novel to an end. I had hoped for more based on the NYT review.
