Publisher's summary
A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection!
It’s a new star-crossed romance about the magic of first love from the acclaimed author of We Are the Ants and Brave Face, Shaun David Hutchinson.
Jack Nevin’s clever trickery and moral flexibility make him the perfect assistant to the Enchantress, one of the most well-known stage magicians in turn-of-the-19th-century Europe. Without Jack’s steady supply of stolen tricks, the Enchantress’ fame would have burned out long ago.
But when Jack’s thievery catches up to them, they’re forced to flee to America to find their fortune. Luckily, the Enchantress is able to arrange a set of sold-out shows at Seattle’s Alaska - Yukon - Pacific World’s Fair Exposition. She’s convinced they’re going to rich and famous until a new magician arrives on the scene. Performing tricks that defy the imagination, Laszlo’s show overshadows the Enchantress, leaving Jack no choice but to hunt for the secrets to his otherworldly illusions. But what Jack uncovers isn’t at all what he expected.
Behind Laszlo’s tricks is Wilhelm - a boy who can seemingly perform real magic. Jack and Wilhelm have an instant connection, and as the rivalry between the Enchantress and Laszlo grows, so too does Jack and Wilhelm’s affection. But can Jack choose between the woman who gave him a life and the boy who is offering him everything?
It’s a stirring tale about the magic of love from award-winning author Shaun David Hutchinson.

Arek hadn’t thought much about what would happen after he completed the prophecy that said he was destined to save the Kingdom of Ere from its evil ruler. So now that he’s finally managed to (somewhat clumsily) behead the evil king (turns out magical swords yanked from bogs don’t come pre-sharpened), he and his rag-tag group of quest companions are at a bit of a loss for what to do next. As a temporary safeguard, Arek’s best friend and mage, Matt, convinces him to assume the throne until the true heir can be rescued from her tower. Except that she’s dead.

Crest is not excited to be on their Journey: the month-long sojourn on land all teen merfolk must undergo. The rules are simple: Help a human within one moon cycle and return to Pacifica to become an Elder—or fail and remain stuck on land forever. Crest is eager to get their Journey over and done with. Humans are disgusting. They’ve polluted the planet so much that there’s a floating island of trash that’s literally the size of a country.

Samuel has one goal in life: fix his broken core. What does he not want? A bossy, overprotective, possessive, teasing dragon sticking his nose in business that is not his. Even if he is sexy and supports Samuel on his quest to find the lost Sousa Mage Clan. Utterly beside the point. He does not need a dragon boyfriend. (Un)fortunately, Dimitri disagrees.

Kade has seven days left to live...unless I do something about it. I am one of the best assassins around, after all. But...I’m not sure I exactly care what happens to Kade. He’s rude, only cares about himself and his casino, and did I mention he doesn’t know a single thing about video games? Okay, okay. Maybe that’s not enough of a reason to watch him dash headlong into danger while I kick back and enjoy the show.

Story
From the best-selling author of the Sandman Slim series, a lush, dark, stand-alone fantasy built off the insurgent tradition of China Mieville and M. John Harrison - a subversive tale that immerses us in a world where the extremes of bleakness and beauty exist together in dangerous harmony in a city on the edge of civility and chaos. The Great War is over. The city of Lower Proszawa celebrates the peace with a decadence and carefree spirit as intense as the war’s horrifying despair.

A stellar contribution to the genres of Magic, fantasy and LGB
The setting was beautifully chosen and well detailed bringing the reader into a time that actually existed. The characters are well developed and compelling. With the exception of a few unnecessarily complicated words, the story is very well told. The protagonists are lovable.

An excellent start!
Cant wait to see what happens next for the characters of this book. Use of history alongside the fantasy was wonderful. It would be wonderful to see the story to continue to follow the history of the circus that were prevalent in those times. 10/10 would listen again.

A Beautiful work of Fiction
I absolutely ADORED this story even with its flaws. it was heart wrenching and I couldn't stop for even a second! The villan is perfect and believable and it felt almost real! I hope we can get a short story to round this off but it was perfect.
the author note made me cry. We are here. We are valid. We deserve love.

A beautifully told love story that’s clever!
A solid historical fiction involving a story about the power and fragility of young love between two talented young men. The characters are well written and the antagonist is perfect!

Interesting twist but the ending felt a little off
First off I wanna say I love this book it is really good the highs are good and the lows are low I was loving everything.
The buildup of anticipation at the end felt flat to me like instead it was turned into a joke instead of a real moment where the love of your life could be killed right in front of you.

only one nitpick
I loved this novel and the story it told. it kept me interested enough to listen in every stolen moment I could find. My only problem i could say I found was that, for a novel that took liberties with the reception of sexual orientations during the period, the author still found a need to include racism? I honestly can't think where the racism was needed. it's a fine line of "do we acknowledge that racism was a thing back then or choose to do the same we did with homosexuality with this story and say fuck it no racism?" I'm not one to really make that call but it did stand out to me that women talked of being doctors and detectives and queer couples were able to be out in the open....but to be black was a stigma? My brain caught on that, I suppose.

Promising story, but clunky and in need of a good editor
I liked where this story was going but couldn’t get past the writing. Lots of adverbs and exposition (characters tend to trade life stories within seconds of meeting each other). I’d definitely be interested in reading more from this author after he’s had more practice and learned the importance of revision.
