Publisher's summary
Uncover the lost years of Critical Role’s unrelentingly upbeat undead spellcaster in this original prequel novel to Laudna’s adventures with Bells Hells.
For as long as she can remember, Laudna has had a friend. A mentor. A little voice whispering in her cropped ear, promising that, no matter how monstrous she becomes or how far she wanders, there will always be someone to guide her.
And so, Laudna is content.
But the thought of more—of life, of love, of the magic stirring in her still veins—is unrelenting in its familiarity. More is the dream of the young girl trapped behind the bloodstained walls of Whitestone, and the nightmare of the woman who now stalks the woods outside them. More, Laudna’s little voice reminds her, is dangerous. From Tal’Dorei to Marquet, the world is infested with heroes destined to rid their kingdoms of creatures like Laudna.
The little voice is right, she knows.
But still, she thinks of more. And when she reaches for that dream, what reaches back will change everything.
Written by USA Today bestselling author Cassandra Khaw, Critical Role: Bells Hells—What Doesn’t Break delves into the unexplored years before Laudna joined up with the crew of Bells Hells, chronicling her departure from Whitestone and her solo adventures on the road to Jrusar.

Axia wishes she could be grateful to have spent her life—or what little she remembers of it—on an asteroid so far from anything of interest that even the greediest spacers see fit to pass it by. Her days may not be as exciting as the swashbuckling stories of her favorite books or as dramatic as the pasts she’s imagined for herself, but they’re as safe as Shatterspace can manage. So why does something inside her long for the stars every time she sees a spacefaring spelljammer vessel?

Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master builds off of the concepts of the well-received GM's guidebook Lazy Dungeon Master, updating that book with five years of new experiences, new approaches, and new observations of the way people prepare and run RPGs. This new book is a completely self-contained work, which does not require anyone to have previously heard the Lazy Dungeon Master. Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master offers a new focused approach for preparing and running our roleplaying games.

Story
Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

"You can never go home again," the saying goes—but Hal, Athena, and Erin have to. In high school, the three were students of the eccentric Professor Marsh, trained in a secret system of magic known as the Dissonance, which is built around harnessing negative emotions: alienation, anger, pain. Then, twenty years ago, something happened that shattered their coven, scattering them across the country, stuck in mundane lives, alone. But now, terrifying signs and portents (not to mention a pointed Facebook invite) have summoned them back to Clegg, Texas.

You may think you know how the fairytale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes. On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three “saints” who control them. The city of the gods. Elantris once stood as the symbol of all that is beautiful. A sprawling metropolis of unrivaled grandeur, it was a symbol of power and strength, built to be as imposing as it was magnificent. The only thing more glorious than the city itself was its inhabitants, Godlike beings, with silvery skin and hair of the purest, flowing white. Able to create powerful magics with a mere wave of their hands, the Elantrians were able to heal mortal wounds and create any object they desired. To be an Elantrian was to be without sickness, without pain and without want.

The Best Crit Role Story
This is by far the best of the audiobooks from Critical Role, but that’s likely because Laudna is one of the best characters from the three campaigns. It’s Marisha’s best character and proves the hate she got in campaign one was unwarranted. Laudna’s backstory was such a shock in campaign that I’m glad it got this book to explore it further. The one failing is that it didn’t give Matt the chance to voice his best campaign three voice, Pâté.

Absolutely beautiful
Khaw’s writing style flawlessly encompasses the beloved character of Laudna that Critical Role fans have come to know. This look into Laudna’s backstory was both heart breaking and breathtaking. I would love to see Cassandra Khaw write for this universe again. Performances by Marisha Ray and Grey DeLisle (Griffin) were amazing and the dynamic between them is deliciously fun. Can’t wait for the next Critical Role book!

I didn’t want it to enddddd
Laudna is my favorite critical role character, ever. I’ve been desperately waiting for this book for ages and it does not disappoint. The voice acting from the actors who play Laudna, Delilah, and (in just a tiny but wonderful part) Imogen is an absolute delight throughout the novel. Extra kudos to Grey Delisle for her performance as Delilah. It was just so, so good. And Robbie Daymond is perfection as a narrator.
The story itself is fantastic. To be completely honest, it was so, so much better than I expected it would be. That isn’t a critique on the book in any way, but upon myself. I know myself, so I knew I’d love a novel about Laudna no matter how it ended up being — but actually appreciating the high quality of the writing, the recurring themes, the well rounded characters, the plot(s) and how tidily they all tied up kind of blindsided me. I was repeatedly shocked at how much I liked the book as a book, and not just as a *Laudna* book.
That being said, very quickly into beginning this novel I noticed a pattern where the author often used Oddly Big Words for things. At first, I figured that my knowledge of Fancy Words was less extensive than I thought. But after four or five of these words, I began to note them down in a journal. It became something of a game tbh, and I’d send the words to various friends and family as I found them to see which ones of us were the smartest and knew the most terms. In total, from chapter five(ish) to the end of the book, I wrote down 21 words. (Side note, figuring out how to spell some of these words from audio-only was a Challenge, but a fun one!)
That last, honestly very silly, paragraph aside — I adored this book. The style of writing, the talent in how it was told, the story itself, just. Everything about it was a delight and a treat and I cannot recommend it enough. Thank you to everyone involved in making this book <3.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go buy the print version as well so I can figure out if I spelled all those big words correctly or not-

A beautiful story
I've been following Critical Role's Bell's Hells since almost the beginning, and I've always been curious on Laudna's backstory, and how she became who she is. This story so far has been beautiful and emotional, and I'm not even done with it yet. Robbie, Marisha, Laura, and Grey do an amazing job at bringing these words and characters to life.
