About this listen

From multi-award winner Whoopi Goldberg comes a new and unique memoir of her family and their influence on her early life.

If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone.

Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time. Growing up in the projects in New York City, there were trips to Coney Island, the Ice Capades, and museums, and every Christmas was a magical experience. To this day, she doesn’t know how her mother was able to give them such an enriching childhood, despite the struggles they faced—and it wasn’t until she was well into adulthood that Whoopi learned just how traumatic some of those struggles were.

Fans of personal memoirs such as Finding Me by Viola Davis and In Pieces by Sally Field will be touched by Bits and Pieces: a moving tribute from a daughter to her mother, and a beautiful portrait of three people who loved each other deeply. Whoopi writes, “Not everybody gets to walk this earth with folks who let you be exactly who you are and who give you the confidence to become exactly who you want to be. So, I thought I’d share mine with you.”

Wow Whoopie

Absolutely loved listening to this narrative. This book is honest and so engaging and sincere. It brought tears of appreciation to me because I too understand what it means to have had and to miss an exceptional mother.

Whooping reading makes everything and anything cool

Her life story is awesome, the closeness with her Mom is out of this Universe. The admiration towards her is fantastic. Love the book.

Well, she is who I've always thought!

I like reality / pragmatism That's Whoopi! I'm going to take her up on her suggestion to reach out to see if there's somebody out there who can help me finish the job. I started. my physical abilities are going quickly... But my mind is still sharp. I have had one hell of a ride!

related to my own childhood growing up in NYC

Loved all the "city" references and menorabilia that only kids can encapsulate growing up in Manhattan and the depiction of those of us that grew up the the projects.

Beautiful tribute + walk down memory lane

The story lands in your heart. You will wish you could meet her mother and her brother after reading this… while at the same time you get to walk with Whoopi through her life — childhood to starting off as a comic to becoming a national sensation. She shares the wisdom of her mother and how they were truly partners throughout her life. And now I have a new term: singular people. I like that. Thank you, Whoopi.

Loved Whoopi as the narrator!

I have not read a book in a while, but I could not put this one down (figuratively). Her voice and commentary keep you engaged. It’s a heartwarming story about her love for her mother and brother.

Whoopi Goldberg Bits and Pieces

I loved listening to Whoopi tell her humorous yet touching story about her brother and mother. The loss of her mother brought up many memories about my own mother, and how much she meant to me.
