Publisher's summary

In the Vietnam War, 2,197 helicopter pilots and 2,717 crew members were killed. Black Cat 2-1 is the story of one pilot who made it home and the valiant men he served with who risked their lives for the troops on the ground. Bob Ford invites listeners into the Huey helicopters he flew on more than 1,000 missions when he and his men dared to protect and rescue. For those whose voices were silenced in that faraway place or who have never told their stories, he creates a tribute that plays like a thriller, captures the humor of men at war, and resounds with respect for those who served with honor.

A deeply personal account

The vivid detail of this Vietnam war memoir, offered in the author’s own voice created for me and incredibly personal connection to his experience in the war and those who served with him. Bob Ford’s excellent reporting provides a clear picture of the brave men from the 282nd who risked and sacrificed everything in the rescue and support of their fellow soldiers.

Well Told Tribute — Above the Best

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Bob Ford recount his service. I was in RVN at almost the same time—just a couple of weeks difference.
I also piloted Hueys but not in Vietnam.
Ford’s humble storytelling manner does not diminish his heroism; a title he didn’t clam but is nonetheless well designed. What an inspirational officer!
“Above the Best” is the motto for Army Aviation. In this man’s case, he was one of the BEST!

Great Story told by a Humble Hero!

I didn’t want it to end. We owe so much to our Viet Nam Vets. This book underlines our debt to them and how brave they are.

Bob's integrity stood out the most

Bob did a great job writing this book and reading it for an audio book. I'm not usually one for war stories but he did a good job keeping the story interesting and enjoyable to listen to. I liked how he included letters he wrote back home to his family. I'm more proud of him after reading his book and very glad to know him. Okeene is a better place for you living here! Great job!

Huey pilot

Enjoyed the book immensely. I went through Fort Wolters in 1972 and completed at Fort Rucker Alabama. I was a cobra crew chief before being a pilot in the 101st airborne division Fort Campbell. Everything he talked about I could review in my head as if I was there. Flew in the Virginia National Guard. Then flew an EMS helicopter on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Enjoyed flying

Very enjoyable listen

First, it was really good to hear the author serve as the narrator. I suppose this isn't always a good idea but I liked it and Mr. Ford did quite well.

The story itself is very interesting and well told. I don't recall having seen or read any stories by pilots specifically in and out of Hue, especially in '68, so it was good to have that bit of void filled.

I do have to wonder, is Mr. Ford really as straight-laced as he seems?
