About this listen

Top 5 Sunday Times and USA Today bestseller. For fans of Laura Lippman and Gillian Flynn comes an electrifying novel of stunning psychological suspense.

I am the star of screaming headlines and campfire ghost stories. I am one of the four Black-Eyed Susans. The lucky one.

As a sixteen-year-old, Tessa Cartwright was found in a Texas field, barely alive amid a scattering of bones, with only fragments of memory as to how she got there. Ever since, the press has pursued her as the lone surviving “Black-Eyed Susan”, the nickname given to the murder victims because of the yellow carpet of wildflowers that flourished above their shared grave. Tessa’s testimony about those tragic hours put a man on death row.

Now, almost two decades later, Tessa is an artist and single mother. In the desolate cold of February, she is shocked to discover a freshly planted patch of black-eyed susans - a summertime bloom - just outside her bedroom window. Terrified at the implications - that she sent the wrong man to prison and the real killer remains at large - Tessa turns to the lawyers working to exonerate the man awaiting execution. But the flowers alone are not proof enough, and the forensic investigation of the still-unidentified bones is progressing too slowly. An innocent life hangs in the balance. The legal team appeals to Tessa to undergo hypnosis to retrieve lost memories - and to share the drawings she produced as part of an experimental therapy shortly after her rescue.

What they don’t know is that Tessa and the scared, fragile girl she was have built a fortress of secrets. As the clock ticks toward the execution, Tessa fears for her sanity, but even more for the safety of her teenaged daughter. Is a serial killer still roaming free, taunting Tessa with a trail of clues? She has no choice but to confront old ghosts and lingering nightmares to finally discover what really happened that night.

Shocking, intense, and utterly original, Black-Eyed Susans is a dazzling psychological thriller, seamlessly weaving past and present in a searing tale of a young woman whose harrowing memories remain in a field of flowers - as a killer makes a chilling return to his garden.

Critic reviews

"Deliciously twisty and eerie, Heaberlin's third psychological suspense novel is intricately layered and instantly compelling." --Library Journal, starred review

"Heaberlin does a neat job, in Black-Eyed Susans, of making us care.... [She's] a pro who strengthens her theme of judicial prejudice by referring to the O.J. Simpson trial and by drawing our attention to the morbid regularity of executions in Texas prisons." --The New York Times Book Review

"A truly compelling tale of the fragility of memory and elusive redemption." --Kirkus Reviews

There's Only One "Gone Girl" and That's Okay

Look, there is only one Gone Girl, and even Gillian Flynn didn't (or couldn't) repeat it. And once it became widely known that Gone Girl had this huge plot twist, even Gone Girl wasn't the same anymore. Only those of us who read Gone Girl before it became a huge hit were truly shocked.

So, with that out of the way, Black-Eyed Susans is a good book, if somewhat predictable. You can figure out pretty early on who did it, but it takes a lot longer to find out how and why and exactly what was going on with Lydia. The flow of the book--and the switching back and forth from past and present--was to figure it out along with Tessa as she combined her partial memories with current information.

The ending was somewhat fantastical, but given the strange things that happen in real life, who's to say its impossible.

I liked most of the characters, especially Tessa and her daughter.

Really good, kept me hooked to the end

I really liked this book a lot. The story was good, the characters were interesting and strong. I really didn't see the end coming at all. Well worth the credit.

Ending was meh

Over all the story was good, it pulled me in and I kept going because I had to know what happened.
But the ending was off in my opinion. The whole story had been a bit slow and was going in a few different directions. And then the ending felt very rushed and not very well thought out.
overall I thought the narrators did a good job with the readings.

Loved it!

I have recently listened to a string of average-at-best books and have been itching for something great. When this title came up on Audible's "2-for-1" sale, I wasn't holding my breath. But this novel did not disappoint! The main character is well-received and relatable. The back-and-forth between "Tessa" (present day) and "Tessy" (Tessa as a child) is easy to follow and builds the story nicely. The narrator is great and does a fantastic job of giving the different characters their own voice and identity.
Also, this story definitely kept my attention from start to finish! There are some funny moments, many suspenseful moments, and an "Aha!" moment that you won't want to miss.
I don't say this lightly: If you loved Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, download this now!

Good and scary

But not predictable as I feared when I began. Get through the first few chapters and you will be hooked.

Good Suspense Novel

What made the experience of listening to Black-Eyed Susans the most enjoyable?

I like suspense audiobooks, and this one had the added benefit of different narrators.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I was a little disappointed because I still felt so much was unexplained.
