About this listen

The year is 1964, and Carl Gordon is an ill-prepared New York assistant US attorney who has lied his way into a transfer to Stockville, Alabama, where he is supposed to monitor and enforce the Civil Rights Act. In a matter of days, the Ku Klux Klan takes aim at him, the outside agitator.

Carl has agreed to represent Oleatha Geary, a black family matriarch who has inherited a mansion in an all-white, race-restricted neighborhood. Carl and Oleatha are engulfed in litigation that turns deadly. Meanwhile, Carl and Oleatha's daughter, Lenore, find themselves in a blossoming romance opposed by everyone, white and black.

Heroism for hatred, controversy in death, friendship, and forbidden love fill the minutes of this remarkable tale of societal ills, culture clashes and political change.

great look back...

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I I really enjoyed a look back on how history might have been. Character development was good. Though there are a lot of characters in this book. It was nice seeing how they all come together. I'm extremely happy to know if things are no longer like this. Part of it was difficult to listen to just because it's so hard to think that life was once that way. I would've given this book 5 stars but in my personal opinion it talked way too much about basketball. I know nothing about basketball and don't really care to hear two chapters full of it.
Narration was good but could get annoying on the echoing side effects when they were thinking to themselves.

Good thriller

Good thrills

I always a enjoy a good thriller. The pacing is always so intense and the story is never overly complicated.

A great Read set in difficult times.

Black Hearts White Minds: A Carl Gordon Legal Thriller, Volume 1.. This book is set in Alabama in the early 60,s. It is disturbing in places, it is uplifting in places. Great character development & great storyline. The narration is excellent and fully portrays the anger and indifference and frustration of the times.
A 5* read/listen, not an easy read but well worth the effort.

Great Story, Annoying Sound Effects

I received a copy of this book from AudioBoom. I enjoyed the story, looking at racism in a different time period, thru a different lens. I especially liked the idea of the boys' basketball tournament. I would have liked a little more time on character development as I never really knew what was up with some of the characters.

What I really found not only distracting, but incredibly annoying, were the sound effects- the echo effect when a character is "thinking" was horrible and totally unnecessary. I didn't like the effects when speakers were using a microphone, but these were simply distracting, not annoying. Seriously- edit the audio and get rid of those echo effects!
