Publisher's summary

Billy Boyle awakens in a field hospital in Sicily with amnesia. In his pocket is a yellow silk handkerchief embroidered with the initial L. Gradually he remembers: he has been sent ashore in advance of the troops with this token from Lucky Luciano to contact the head of the Sicilian Mafia. But he must also thwart a murderous band of counterfeiters of Army scrip led by Vito Genovese.

Good as they are, each succeeding one is better

I am hooked. This author is masterful in establishing a verisimilitude of context, mystery and mission. He is overlooked and underrated. I will binge the rest of the Billy Boyle series.

They just get better and better.

The narrator is perfect for the various accents/characters required.
The development of secondary characters continues to impress. And the main character is about as likable as possible.

Action, Intrigue in WWII Sicily

The action packed third book in James R. Benn's Billy Boyle WWII Mysteries is wonderful in audiobook form. Author Benn incorporates real events into his stories as a dazed Billy ventures around Sicily, from terrifying battle to a Mafioso Don's villa, just one small step ahead of those who would hinder his assignment. Along the way, he encounters old friends and old enemies, too and he does make one important new friendship with a Detroit cop named Mike.
My only wish is for the narrator to have a real Boston accent.

The best yet

The mystery is not as well developed in this 3rd BB book, but the literary value is the best of the 3. All 3 are extremely well written. The events of the 1st 2 books are important in this one, so it's best to read them in order.

Blood alone

Kind of a mixed up story, it must have been the hit on his head.
