Safeguarding the witness

Close to bringing the Dupree crime family that murdered his parents to justice, FBI agent Ian Slade wants to track the leader - not protect the man's niece. But with Esme Dupree's uncle determined to silence her before she can testify against her brother, Ian and his K-9 partner are duty-bound to guard her. Even if her family ties make him doubt her innocence. But as he and Esme fight to survive the chase through the Florida Everglades, it becomes clear to Ian that she's nothing like her family. And soon, Ian must choose between the vengeance he's craved for so long and a future rich in forgiveness and hope.

Enjoyed

Really liked these characters. Thought author did a good job retaining storyline and character development from previous books in series.

the suspense and the aloneness of Ismee until Ian found her and even then she felt alone and afraid

this book was intriguing and very suspenseful. It ties in very well with the other.books in the series but is totally in its own element. taking place in the Florida Everglades makes it even more intriguing. I am looking forward to reading the whole series. I love the characters and settings. Great book. Great author.

Story

The story was very repetitive. The whole book probably could have been half the length.

Good performance, slow story

I see that this got very high ratings, but for me it was more like a youth book than an adult book. The story was slow moving for me without a whole lot to it. The performance was very good though.

Good plot

The story line was interesting but the narration ruined it. The story seemed to drag on forever.

Horribly BORING!!

I’ve enjoyed the previous 3 books in this series but not this one. It is extremely slow and deals mainly with thoughts of a relationship instead of the storyline. I only continued to endure it to keep up with the storyline of the series.

Slow

The first part of the book is mostly told through the author telling the thoughts and feelings of the male and female protagonists. Much time is spent rehashing the same information we learned from other books as well as the same thoughts of the protagonists. The author has the difficult job of trying to convince the readers / listeners that the female protagonist will run away from the male protagonist and neither will fall in love with them when everyone knows that this will be the eventual end of the story. It makes the first part of the story boring.

The middle of the story gets more interesting because it advances character development. I am about three hours into the book but only one night has passed. The plot still has yet to advance making the listening tedious. There is more dialogue which is much better than listening to the rehashed internal musings of the characters.

The end of the story provides a plot twist which I did not see coming. It does make sense, though. I liked the climatic end to action a lot. It created more interest for me and sets up a more detailed plot for the next book. I also like the hinted at story about Dillon & fiancé. This gives scant detail but created a more complex storyline leaving something for the listener to wonder about.

The overall Christian message was that we should not judge others by their family associations but by their actions and characters. The text lightly examines what makes a person genuine and good. The characters reminded me of the parable of the seed and the sower. I wish the author had drawn more from literary and Biblical allusions. There was real potential here for a more thoughtful incarnation of the hard, thorny, and good soil spoken of in the words of Jesus. It was intriguing to think about a Christian family whose children turned out so differently. I liked the implication that the child who turned out good needed courage in order to live out that right behavior in an evil world. She also needed love snd companionship which she ended up with in the end. This whole series is a light one, but I can’t help but want a bit more, I guess.

In all, the book’s message delivered in an uplifting manner, and the romance is filled with some clean adventure. The narrator was good.
