Publisher's summary
After completely and independently conquering a debilitating eating disorder, Kathryn Hansen wrote Brain over Binge to share her struggle—and her escape from it—with those still trapped in the compulsive binge-purge cycle. Since the book’s initial release in 2011, it has endured as an essential road map for using the power of the brain to erase harmful habits and create lasting change. The second edition is fully revised and updated with new information, compelling insights, and uplifting success stories that will inspire listeners to break free from their own self-defeating behaviors.
Brain over Binge is both a memoir and a scientific account, providing a gripping personal narrative and a research-based perspective on bulimia and binge eating disorder. Kathryn traces the course of her own condition and then describes in detail her unconventional approach to recovery. In the process, she offers a much-needed alternative viewpoint on the landscape of eating disorder literature to help others in the throes of any form of out-of-control eating.
The mainstream view of bulimia holds that it’s a complex disorder that manifests as a means of coping with deep underlying emotional and psychological problems. But the author resolutely departs from this philosophy, cuts through the confusion she experienced in traditional therapy, and simplifies both the origins of binge eating and its cure. As Kathryn explains the brain-based principles that led to her recovery from relentless bingeing and purging, Brain over Binge sheds current and crucial light on our human potential to overcome destructive patterns and reclaim our lives.

No one wants to overeat. And certainly no one wants to overeat for years, become overweight, and end up with a high risk of diabetes or heart disease--yet two thirds of Americans do precisely that. Even though we know better, we often eat too much. Why does our behavior betray our own intentions to be lean and healthy? The problem, argues obesity and neuroscience researcher Stephan J. Guyenet, is not necessarily a lack of willpower or an incorrect understanding of what to eat.

It sucks to acknowledge that you are what’s keeping you from the life you want. You sacrifice what you want most for what you want in the moment. Story
The Brave Athlete solves the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. You don't have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that accesses your memories and runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that's when bad things happen. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don't want? You can.

So helpful
I absolutely loved this book! So far I have been binge free for 2 months after reading this! Chapter 11 was the most helpful gem and I will definitely keep revisiting it. I will say I felt the book was way too long and got repetitive after chapter 11 so I struggled to finish it do a while. Please read if you are struggling with your eating habits!

Never realized I was a binge eater.
I truly enjoyed this book and found it very enlightening. I am currently in a program called Bright Line Eating, and one of the groups was talking about this book. I thought I would get it just for some tips for what I was doing. I never thought that binging was something I did, however, after listening to this audiobook, I completely disagree with myself and realize I have been a binge eater since in the single digits of life. Kathryn did a great job of sharing her life experiences with binge eating and the science behind it with the audience on a very real personal level. If you struggle with eating, or with binging and purging, then you will find useful things in this book! Again, until I read this book, I never would have said I was a binge eater. Now I will say that I most definitely was. Thank you for a terrific personal story and fantastic information. Thank you for continuing to help people on their journey through binge eating.

I used this with plant medicine to reboot my brain
I've spent 20 years in therapy and 30 years in self help programs, which helped my complex PTSD and narcissistic thinking, but my eating disorder/food addiction was always doing push-ups in the parking lot while I was in "the rooms." I've gained and lost hundreds of pounds over the years. This book clicked for me, however, I needed help with my pain first. I started using medical cannabis at 55 for Lyme disease/PTSD pain and found that if I always use the first dose of the day to meditate, pray, and unplug from all my pleasure traps, I can easily dismiss my addictive urges. This book, along with the ritual use of plant medicine, has started me on a path to real and positive change. Bonus: I can suddenly play the bongo drums!

Excellent
I really got a lot out of this book and I am not a binge eater. However, I am a recovering compulsive overeater. I enjoyed how Kathryn discussed - in so much detail - her story. I'm not sure how she remembered all of it. Her description of her journey addressed so many of the issues I had to encounter when I was recovering from compulsive overeating such as what to eat and how to eat as a normal person. How I achieved my recovery is different from how Kathryn achieved hers, but our two stories parallel each other in so many ways, as in it all started with a diet - mine when I was 12.
