Publisher's summary

You were drawn to linguistics as a course of study because you enjoy tackling challenges, so why not bring the skills you have honed to professional challenges that speak to you?

The world (of work) needs linguists! Linguists possess a unique set of analytical skills that are applicable in any professional context, and which may also be brought to the process of finding the job. Who better to tackle the series of texts and interactions that comprise the job search than someone trained to critically analyze language? There's no reason our cover letters shouldn't be the very best ones out there!

In this book, along with developmental activities to help you use the tools and skills you already possess to navigate your career next steps, I share stories of professional linguists to help answer the perennial question, "Linguistics? What can you do with that?"

"Here's to what's next!"

An Edifying Career Journey

Overall, the audio book is well paced and Anna Marie Trester's voice makes listening a pleasant experience. In the beginning she provides the journeys/stories of other linguists and her own journey that illustrate how opportunities become available, even in the most unconventional or unexpected places. These stories highlight the importance of listening and remaining open to possibilities. I love how she highlights the significance of linguists, particularly socio-linguists, since it appears that linguistics is a career that some may not recognize the possibilities for outside academia. This also highlights the significance for other disciplines that appear to be “purely” academic. One of the stories illustrates the importance of research into career during grad years to see the possibilities outside academia. The latter part of the book reveals what one is doing wrong in resumes, cover letters, and interviews. Anna Marie then shares with listeners the significance of language in writing that resume and cover letter that receives notice from employers. She explains how to phrase one's experience, education, skills, and knowledge during the interview to improve one's chances of being hired. This book is for anyone who has been struggling in the job market to get that initial interview or to land the job!

Irony

This audiobook regarding linguistics and the application of the field in non-academic settings happens to be the only one I have ever heard on audible that has multiple recording errors. The narrator will correct and accidentally repeat herself and at times we can hear a man speaking in the background. The message is good, but the presentation is unpolished. Please make these corrections. I feel as if I wasted a monthly credit.
