But beneath the luxurious world lies a sinister underbelly and an uncompromising elite who want to keep Marie and Louis pawns in a deadly game.

Will history repeat itself? Or will these doomed lovers outwit their enemies and escape their grisly fate?

Pleasant Surprise!

What an enjoyable read!! This book sucked me right in. I really enjoyed all the historical references while still feeling like a fresh take. I really enjoyed how fleshed out Marie and Louis were and seeing a genuine romance between them. And what a bittersweet ending! Narrated was fantastic!

A dreamy, eerie party in neon Versailles

Dahlin dazzles with a cyberpunk, dystopian retelling of the decadent and terrifying story of Marie Antoinette, from her first entry into the Franc Kingdom when she marries the distant-and-nervous Prince Louis all the way to the beginnings of the Revolution.

The smooth YA first-person prose has a dreamy quality. The ideas butt up against some of the most urgent, violent political movements of our current times. Imagine the story of Marie Antoinette, purportedly the first real victim of a libelous mob, mixed with Instagram and hate forums!

Clueless and PR-focused Marie struggles to navigate the First and Third estates, the political conflicts of mega corporations, the duplicity of AI, the history doomed to repeat itself, and the strange world of the Wastelands, all while being hidden from the truth by firewalls and holograms.

The narrator does an excellent job of speaking the multiple languages laced in occasionally throughout the piece. Though I thought increasing the speed to 1.5x improved the experience for me, she pulls of quite a few fun characters while giving them distinct voices.

boring and cringy

The book was very boring, and cringy at times. The ending was different then I thought it was going to be and it seemed a bit rushed and sloppy. Idk maybe it wasn't my thing but I'm usally into historical fiction especially when it has a twist, but I feel this new context wasn't very well thought out and delivered.
