About this listen

A disturbing package leads Detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott to investigate four dangerous murder suspects in this "magnetic" British mystery (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times) that inspired the acclaimed HBO Max series C.B. Strike.

When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them...

Career of Evil is the third in J. K. Rowling's highly acclaimed series featuring private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott. A fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner, Career of Evil is also a gripping story of a man and a woman at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives.

Critic reviews

"Robert Glenister is the man in this fine performance of Robert Galbraith's (aka J.K. Rowling) most recent detective thriller. Having narrated the first two books in the series, Glenister knows the main characters...." (AudioFile)

Another fun read by "Robert Galbraith"

I have to say that these get better and better as they go (this was my favorite of the series so far). Cormoran and Robin are getting more and more likable and, since the threat/mystery came closer to home in this case, they (and you) are more invested in the outcome. The twists were plausible (although I should warn readers who are new to Galbraith that there's a definite--but enjoyable--cartoonish quality to all these stories so expect some exaggeration both in the character development and in the plots). Until the end, you are guessing who the murderer is right along with them and the resolution is quite satisfactory . Definitely reading the next one when it comes.

Very thrilled to hear she's got six more in the works

Although the Harry Potter books are among the best I have ever read, JK Rowling has done a brilliant job of transitioning into the world of crime and detectives. I look forward to her future novels.

consistently good

Any additional comments?

The overall plot development of this book kept me entertained. The character development was really furthered in this book and gave new insight into the same characters from the first novel. Very little from the first novel was re-hashed so it didn't feel like time was wasted getting into the story - the back story was woven in nicely.

Great book!!

A wonderful dark edition to an already amazing series. Amazing dynamic between Strike and Robin.
Ending was really a bit of a cliffhanger so I look forward to the next book.

You must read these books in order if you haven't already.

Narrator is defiantly a favourite of mine as well.

Over-the-top Terrifying

I am not a huge fan of suspense, especially when it's coupled with psychological darkness and/or violence. Anyone who's read Career of Evil is currently snickering, because it's hard to get darker or more violent than Galbraith's latest story! A few times I nearly quit and traded over to the "real book," so I could skip particularly gory sections, but I soldiered on and, ultimately, found Career as engrossing and suspenseful as the other two Cormoran Strike novels in the series. I *do* question whether we needed as much detail about the bad guy's sexual habits, and if I could interview Rowling, I'd ask her about the violence against women that pervades this book. . . . but it is well written, the characters continue to develop in interesting ways, and, nearly against my will, I found it fascinating. That said, I can't imagine what Strike's next outing will involve!

Top writing and narration

This series is extremely well-written. I couldn't stop listening! One of the best mystery / crime writing books available. It's not often I'm kept completely guessing right up to the reveal of the "who-dunnit". The development of the main characters and their relationship is finely done. What a cliff-hanger the ending is on this note! Can't wait for the next volume!

The narration is supreme. While I'm sure this is a great read, I highly recommend the narration. Not that I'm an expert, but his ability to do different British accents as well as males and females is top-notch.

Perhaps a bit gruesome if you are sensitive to that, but not overly. Highly recommend this series. Start at the beginning though!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all three books in this series - both Roberts excel. The plots are great, well written, well paced and with some cracking characters, all given voice excellently by the excellent Robert Glenister. Robert Galbraith cannot write them fast enough and I look forward to what I hope will be a good few more books in this series.

Best of series and my new favorite book!!

This is by far my new favorite book! The series was amazing from the start but, in my opinion, Career of Evil was the clear winner. The writing style, narrator, countless twists and turns, bits of humor, and the dynamic duo of Strike and Robin made this book impossible to put down. I'm also thinking Shanker should have his own series and that Matthew needs to be punched.
