Very Helpful for Caregiver’s of Any Kind

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The author, with a blend of expertise and empathy, brings to life the realities of caring for someone with dementia or Alzheimer's. She offers practical advice, from understanding the disease's progression to managing legal and financial matters. What sets this audiobook apart is its focus on the caregiver's well-being. It's not just about the technicalities of care but also about maintaining your health and sanity in the process. The real-life stories resonate deeply with me personally, as I have also struggled with a family member going through this disease. It made me feel less alone in my own experience. The narration adds to the experience, with a voice that's both comforting and clear, making complex topics easy to grasp. It's straightforward, devoid of unnecessary fluff, and speaks directly to the heart of what it means to be a caregiver. Highly recommended!

Essential and Suppotive

If a loved one is in the early stages of dementia, or even if you suspect that this may be the case, this book is essential. Written by a pharmacist, former caregiver, and speaker on caregiving, the book offers information and advice on all aspects of dementia.

Early on, the author explains how changes in the brain manifest as symptoms of dementia, describes the seven states of dementia, discusses different medications that can address various symptoms, and offers advice on the different types of in-home and out-of-home care. The author then delves into possible behavioral changes and how to address them, communication strategies at different stages of dementia, ways to help your loved one stay as engaged as possible through activities and the like, and so much more. Throughout the advice is practical, and the tone is supportive and encouraging. The book also addresses safety issues, reminds the listener to deal with legal and financial matters, and emphasizes the importance of self-care for the caregiver.

The many real-world examples are relatable and helpful. Among other things, they help to remind the listener that those suffering from dementia do not choose their behaviors, which requires caregivers to be patient and empathetic even when doing so is difficult.

A Thoughtful, Sensitive and Necessary Book

I don't know anyone in my family who, thank goodness, suffers from dementia or Alzheimer's, but if I did, this would be the book to read and follow. It covers what each condition's issues encompass and the stages of progression they will go through. Once your family member is diagnosed, there is a treatment and care regimen that needs to be followed, especially as it relates to managing and understanding the common behavioral issues you will likely face. Depending on your economic situation, at-home or outside care might be what's needed. There's getting the person's home set up for safety and comfort as well as the financial and legal affairs that must be dealt with. They and your lifestyle will and must change. There's more still inside than this little review can cover. So! Read this book and get clued in!

A (must-have) gift for caregivers

In my life, I have helped, as a research assistant for a Ph.D. who works as practitioner in the field of dementia studies, and I found this book to be spot-on with all of the research and best-practices I’ve seen. This book not only shares how a caregiver can be the best caregiver possible, but also how to recharge and practice effective self-care (so they can continue to be a great caregiver and a great, well-rested human being to and for themselves). Not only is this book backed in sound best practices from someone in the field but also is from the standpoint of someone who has actually been a caregiver. Bravo and thanks to the author!! Definitely recommend.

Fantastic resource!

I found this book covers so many of the steps needed to be a supportive and caring support for your family member with dementia. This book helps to understand the causes, symptoms, and stages of dementia so that it, hopefully, can be recognized early. They cover everything from how to manage changes in your loved one's personality to the loss of ability to care for themselves. Personally, the chapters later in the book on alternative and holistic therapies for the person suffering from dementia and the self-care tips for the caregiver were invaluable! These opened my eyes to keeping myself healthy and to build habits into my daily routine to maintain my own mental health. I have had grandparents suffer from dementia but was not the primary caregiver at the time. Now that I'm older, I feel more prepared in recognizing the signs that my loved ones may have beginning stages of this horrible disease and feel that this resource will help guide me through setting up appointments and making the hard decisions that come with all stages of dementia. Highly recommend!
