FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016

Audible Originals brings you a brand new audiobook adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic gothic novella, Carmilla - starring Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey), David Tennant (Doctor Who and Broadchurch) and Phoebe Fox (Life in Squares and The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death)

One of the very first vampire thrillers, this audio adaptation follows 18-year-old Laura as she recounts the story of her mysterious, intriguing and beautiful house guest Carmilla, who is stranded in the forest after a carriage accident and taken in by Laura’s widowed father. The girls develop a friendship which turns into a passionate meeting of souls. A relationship of vampire and prey, the story is told through Laura’s eyes as she is drawn further into Carmilla’s terrifying world of pleasure and pain.

A masterpiece of erotic Gothic horror, Carmilla encompasses mystery, suspense, forbidden lust, violence...and lots of blood....

Carmilla has been dramatised by Robin Brooks, an actor, dramatist and author who has been working as a playwright for over 25 years. Carmilla was directed by Fiona McAlpine of Allegra Productions for Audible Originals.

    Amazing!!!!

This was so beautifully done! I listened to the production as I read along with the book and it really helped me visualize the story! My only dislikes was that some character names had been changed and not mentioned i.e Lafontane was not included as well as the mention of Baron Vordenburg which was replaced by the doctor. When reading along, it skipped some parts in the book and dialogue was added but was well done and allowed more character development instead of just hearing Laura's thoughts. Overall, amazing and will definitely be listening to it again. Highly recommended!

Perfect story for dark winter nights

If you could sum up Carmilla in three words, what would they be?

    Gothic, mysterious, entertaining.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Carmilla of course, got to love a baddy!

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

They bring the stories and characters to life. The main female leads gives the story an hypnotic feel.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, its not a moving story, the plot is terribly obvious, the whole thing is even a little hammy. I was entertained, but not moved.

    Any additional comments?

This is not an original storyline, its not supposed to be, I'm sure. Just enjoy a well performed classic Vampire story.

    Very entertaining

I usually think audio books which insist on including music and sound effects are over-produced, with "Just read the damn story" my usual response. Audible's Camilla is the rare exception. Excellent performances, very conservative use of effects, and appropriate music which is not over-present.

    Good Story

I really liked it. If you've ever watched any Dracula movie (my fave is Dracula with Gary Oldman & Winona Ryder), you will know how they get all the nuances from this adaptation.

    Vampires in another name

Excellent performance by the narrators. It seemed to be a BBC mid-afternoon drama. short enough not to be boring; no lack of plot development.

    Delightful story and performance

Masterpiece of story telling, if not particularly scary. The music reminiscent of victoriana, but could have been a bit more foreboding

    Interesting

Fun to hear an early vampire version and its differences from conventional lore. Questions remain.
