About this listen

At the height of the summer season, Estes Park explodes with people, wildlife, fireworks, and...murder.

The Cozy Corgi Bookshop and Bakery is buzzing with tourists, and Winifred Page and her quirky corgi, Watson, celebrate the Fourth of July picnicking with family and friends - of the human and four-legged variety. As summer blooms with romance for Fred and Sergeant Branson Wexler, murder lurks around the corner.

With a friend's life in danger, Fred and Watson doggedly pursue the investigation, even as Fred finds herself once again at odds with the police department. But caring for two chaotic corgis while navigating emotions from the past in the midst of solving a mystery might be too much, and Fred hits a roadblock.

As relationships are tested and secrets exposed, Fred might lose more than one person she loves....

Such a page turner

This story had a lot of unexpected twist. It is differently a he said, she said kind of story. Friendships made and lost.

Liking heroine less and less

At first seemed like cute stories, but am getting sick of Fred. She’s got a big chip about being told what to do, but is entitled and demanding when deciding she wants to investigate. If others are rude—-gasp, but she can be as rude as she wants to be. Clearly she has something against those who are not eccentric or flamboyant, as though people who are “run of the mill” are evil or boring. Branson is way too
good for her. The cuteness has worn off for me.

Chaotic Corgis

I loved getting a new better look into Polly. He's such a sweet guy and he didn't deserve to be attacked and then the murder in his store and everyone warning Fred to back off from the investigation just makes it all the more intriguing. I really enjoyed that twist that was thrown into this story and it made it such an awesome listen. Angie did a great job narrating and really brought this story to life.

Flotsam, Jetsam…and Watson

I have become a corgi fan through reading this series and this book made me grateful I only have one dog. After Paulie is injured in an attempted murder, Fred finds herself agreeing to care for his two corgis. Add her own Watson and trying to solve a murder and the woman is pretty busy. And while Watson is well-trained (although at times resistant to obeying – he is one stubborn dog), Flotsam and Jetsam are a bit on the crazy side. So…chaotic times all around.

The murder Fred has to solve happened at the same time as Paulie’s attempted murder so there’s the question of who was the intended target and who was collateral damage? Because what are the odds of two different perpetrators attacking two different people at the same time and place, right?

There is more of Branson the handsome detective in this book and his slow burn with Fred faces some serious challenges – especially when he orders her not to investigate. Hello, can we say red flag in front of a bull? Fred does, of course, investigate. And along the way we meet even more members of the Estes community. Her family and friends are there to support her, even throwing in a Fourth of July celebration. Watson is also at her heels, although I commiserated with him when he was put in costumes. I know my dog wouldn’t tolerate it, so good on Watson for persevering with the craziness.

Angie Hickman returned to narrate this book, the sixth in the series, and I was grateful. Her Fred is pitch-perfect and she always has great voices for the other characters. Her narration is always steady and leads to a good and solid performance. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Not cute fun or tolerable anymore.

The main character is terribly judgmental and expects everyone to like her (and her dog) even when she is openly hostile.

Strange portrayal of males

The males in this series are strange. Men aren’t allowed to have an opinion in Estes Park? It’s like reading the island of misfit males.

The series was light at the start, but now it’s weighed down with so much internal monologue that reading it feels like dragging your feet through a muddy swamp: heavy and exhausting.

Some of the lines are ridiculous too: “you promised my dog that you would never hurt his mother.” That’s a strange reaction by a 40 year old woman.

Fred’s reactions throughout are very strange and illogical and this story made her unlikable.

Main character is…. Awful

This is the fifth book in the series I’ve listened to. Winifred was told she was entitled and obnoxious by another character. They were spot on. She is the worst. And she’s the absolute worst ‘girlfriend’

Not sure if I’ll bother to finish the series.
