Fabulously insightful and funny.

After living in China almost 10 years, there is nothing that scares me more then another China book written by a Laowei (foreigner) who thinks he/she knows the secret to this land. Language Gymnastics is anything but this. It is ridiculously funny, uncomfortably accurate and totally memorable! I recommend this book to all those looking to learn a little more about China, its culture and people whilst having a laugh at the same time. In fact I have prescribed this book as standard reading for all my younger Chinese staff who would benefit greatly from a refresher course in the Chinese way.

Very helpful

As a person who wanted to learn more about China generally - without ever having been there myself - I found this book a wonderful introduction; complete with an outside-in and inside-out views of China, its customs, its people, and its languages (dialects).

A fresh approach to an ancient challenge

The authors do a great job of calming the reader/listener’s fears about learning Mandarin through their fun yet pragmatic approach. This title is more about engaging the listener through stories, idioms, and the authors’ own foibles in order to encourage onward learning than it is an actual language lesson.
This should be the required first “text” of every Mandarin course to get the students into the right frame of mind.
Kudos
