Who thought writing "LOSERS" on a menu could lead to an affair of love notes?
It didn't start out as love. How could it when I vowed never to fall in love....
Reef Burton, the sexy blue-eyed football player, and his mates are definitely not "Losers", yet writing it on a menu gave me reason to smile. Only it didn't make it to the trash.
He returns to the restaurant where I work wearing his killer smile. I wasn't to know those squiggly lines and arrows meant something. An offensive play his football team learned at an earlier training session. Coming here discussing the team plays over coffee helps...so he says. He'll see what I wrote. Apart from it being awkward, the next time I serve him he could also report me to my boss.
I can't lose my job when in hindsight I need two to pay all the bills rolling in, and to care for my invalid father.
I'm thankful he kept it as our secret.
Until he left me a note.
Responding will only lead to more trouble.
So when Mr Blue Eyes-Blond Surfy-Hair gives me one of his spine tingling looks, how can I resist?

I was hooked on the story that Leesa Bow wove from the first to the last chapter. I really loved the main characters of Reef Burton and Macy Reynolds; although there were times that Macy frustrated me. The entertaining secondary characters added another level to my enjoyment and I would love to read more about them in the future.
Set years before Cocky Bastard it was so much fun to see the glimpses of a younger Chance appear in this story. There was some angst, great banter and humour that had me laughing. It was also a romantic, entertaining, fun read that left me with a smile on my face.
It was steamy and the chemistry between Reef and Macy sizzled. The narration by Alix Dale and Nathaniel Black detracted from my enjoyment at times. I am Australian and they tried too hard to sound Australian, if that makes sense, however the story is solid.
Entertaining

Another fun CHW read! This one was unique because it’s set yrs before Cocky Bastard (at the start of Chance’s soccer career so we see a ton of Chance cameos here) Reef was everything I love in a BBF, a sweet, sexy athlete with a big heart. Macy pushed him away a bit more that I liked (I just wanted them together) and then when the drama went down they both overreacted and it dragged out a bit again. But it was enjoyable.

The story starts with a smattering of meet-cute cheeky notes between curvy waitress Macy and shy, sweet, poetry spouting football pro Reef. Macy pursues meaningless sex, getting intimate with Reef during their first moments alone together. From there we get a lot of sex, but each physical encounter is super quick and lacking in any chemistry. Reef is nothing but sweet to her, while she shuts him down constantly and insists it’s just sex between them, because she’s got way too much baggage (curvy girl insecurity, adulterous mom, dad needing constant medical care, and the list goes on). Reef is endlessly patient and understanding ... until he misunderstands a situation and immediately breaks up with her, suddenly behaving as if he’s a completely different person. Maybe I’m too old to understand the Instagram generation, but all the drinking, casual sex, and snap judgments leading to constant misunderstandings made this story anything but fun, sexy, or cocky.
The other oddity was the story being told with 4 hours of female narration, then 2 hours of male narration. Having listened to 2/3 of the book without the male narrator, I already had a voice in my head and the late introduction of a gangly-sounding male narrator grated on me (Reef is supposed to have a pro-football body). Plus, the male narrates so slow. I bumped it up to 1.5x by the end- but that only helped with the pace, not the reedy tone. All in all, this was a sweet, maudlin bore of a story.
Barely cheeky, not cocky at all
