About this listen
The bogeyman is real.
In a tunnel deep beneath an Alaskan mountain, a man is brutally murdered.
Just one in a series of grisly deaths, it is not long before whispers grow that the Qalupalik, a terrifying creature born from centuries of superstition and fear, has come to wreak havoc on the small coastal town of Shackleton, Alaska.
With no way to stop the slayings, the town turns to disgraced ex-cop John Decker, hoping he can do what they could not. The assignment, far from his native Louisiana, might be just what Decker needs to put the past behind him. But as the bodies mount and the town grows frantic, Decker realizes that whatever is on the loose is no mere superstition. The bogeyman is real, and it's up to him to stop it.
Cold Sanctuary is part of the John Decker series of novels. However, each book is a stand-alone story and does not require you to have listen to the other books in the series.

Good story!
I like this storyline. Love the characters. The narrator left a lot to be desired though. Not the greatest--far too robotic, not to mention his stereotypical, way too theatrical, lead up to climaxes...

Great storyline
Interesting storyline. However the narrator is lacking skills. His main character sounds boring, not a speech impediment but not normal either. He did much better with the woman's voices.

Great. But...
I loved the story. The characters are well developed and the settings are vividly described. However the narrator was a bit overdramatic, and monotone.

very engaging
I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to people who like monster stories that are not gory and horrifying.

Shivers
The prologue sent shivers down my spine. Keep going....the rest of the book kept me on edge. It was wonderful to have the main character, John Decker to share the adventure.

A pretty good sophomore entry in this series
The John Decker series is monster hunter series. The main character denies that through the first book and about three quarters of this, the second book. Then he accepts it and the action can begin in earnest. Not that there is a shortage of action throughout the book, but Decker's feeling sorry for himself is done, and not a moment too soon. He is a fun and interesting character.
The monster in this case is pretty original, veering away from the first books supernatural threat to something more science (fiction) based. And threatening it most certainly is. How that creature is dispatched had me guessing for most of the story.
This book also sets up the rest of the series and starts to explain why this out of work southern ex sheriff is running around hunting things that should not exist in our world.
Overall, this is a fun story that keeps you interested throughout. I recommend you first read What Vengeance Comes, the first book in the series, as it is referenced several times here. But you can infer most of what happened there by reading very easily between the lines here. It would just give you more points of reference.
All in all, I recommend this book.
