About this listen

Collins Italian with Paul Noble combines an exciting new, nontraditional approach to language learning with the easy, relaxed appeal of an audio-only product. No books. No rote memorisation. No chance of failure.

Paul Noble is a genius with a higher IQ than Einstein. Despite this, he still struggled with language learning at school. He found himself feeling 'confused, incapable and unable to really say anything'. As a result of his negative early experiences, Paul has come up with a groundbreaking new method of language teaching that removes the need for months of study. With Paul Noble, everyone really can speak a language.

Part 3 of the course covers:

  • Useful phrases when shopping
  • Vocabulary for conversing with a pharmacist or doctor
  • Practice and revision
  • The future tense

A native-speaking Italian expert helps Paul to deliver the course and to perfect your pronunciation. No complicated grammatical explanations, no rote memorisation, no writing - no stress. Learn over 6,000 words in no time at all, and - most importantly - learn how to make your new vocabulary work for you. (Use the accompanying booklet as a reference and revision tool.)

Better way to learn a language

I’ve taken classes & listened to audio tapes, but Paul Noble teaches you how to put together longer and longer sentences using what you’ve just learned. An innovative and helpful way to learn the structure of a language. It helped a lot when I last went to Italy.

Effective

After trying many of the language courses available, this is one of the ones I have chosen to keep using. It's easy to grasp and quiet enjoyable.

Well worth the cost!

A little fast at the end and it certainly will have you reviewing the last chapter more frequently then the others. Well worth the cost. the best language course I found. Do wish I had the books though. Will look for them online.

Excellent!

He really has a way with the drill! Fun and so effective. Plus, unlike many programs to learn a language, the English speaker truly IS a native English speaker. I am now ready to go dug up my roots in Abruzzo!

Good Course, Some Flaws

I successfully taught myself Welsh using the audio lessons from SaySomethingInWelsh, so I've been looking for something similar to teach myself Italian next. This is pretty close, but it's not perfect. You get a pretty good grounding in conjugating the "modal" verbs (can, want, must, etc.). This is what I needed, it's worth the money spent, and it's why I give the book 4 stars. Now for some small criticisms:

This might sound counter-intuitive but the course holds your hand a little too much? The pace is relatively slow and the book is constantly reminding you about grammatical rules, as opposed to just giving you sentences to translate and letting your brain do the work of saying things because they come to "feel right" through repetition, not because you remember a grammar rule. Repetition and discipline is how you learn a language, not intellectually accumulating grammar rules.

It also focuses a little too much on really specific tourist vocabulary/phrases (phrases like "I have vomited" or "where is the tourist office?").

Another thing to look out for is that the book will sometimes confuse you by mixing idiomatic translations in with literal translations. So the book will ask for the translation of "I have been sick" and expect you to say "I vomited," which are obviously two different constructions grammatically. Another example: the book will ask you to translate "Can I pay *by* credit card" and expect you to say "Can I pay *with* credit card?" Saying "can I pay with credit" is something we say in English, so I don't know why you'd risk people confusing "by" and "with."

Great learning tool!

It’s very easy to follow, and the way the books are structured it makes you remember things that were taught early on. Made me feel very comfortable during my holiday in Italy.

Fabulous!!

I've tried just about every way out there to learn Italian, including studying the language in college and even living in Italy for a few months. I learned a lot of the technicalities but couldn't get to the point I was comfortable putting it all together. This system is by far the best I've ever tried and is finally getting me where I wanted to be. He gives simple, practical direction on verb conjugations and you learn quickly. I'm onto level four now and feel like I'm finally putting the language together after just two weeks listening to this system on my commute to work. I'm more comfortable speaking than ever before, and just so happy I found this. Fabulous language system at a fabulous price!

Very good, but...

I'm a huge fan of the Paul Noble language series. On various trips over the past few years I've used his courses to help learn some valuable French, German, Spanish, and Italian. This series has 'done me a solid' countless times. Paul Noble is a great teacher, and I constantly recommend this audio series to friends and family.

HOWEVER, after completing both the French and Italian courses through all 3 levels, I can definitely say that the French one is so much better. Truth be told, I was a little frustrated by the 3rd part of the Italian series. Paul's priorities seemed a little weird. He spent tons of time teaching us how to say "heat stroke" and yet he spends hardly any time at all on present tense verb conjugations and on using all of the different forms of "you." At the end of the course, it was like he was trying to cram in all of the really important stuff he still hadn't taught. On a trip to Italy, I felt tongue-tied and restricted several times, especially when trying to bumble through the present tense.

My advice--get this series, because it's awesome. However, study present tense verb conjugations on your own.

And if you get heat stroke, you'll be set!
