È con questa immagine scarnificata che Primo Levi, nell'incipit di Se questo è un uomo, indica la necessità di riflettere sulla condizione delle donne prigioniere ad Auschwitz. Eppure per molti anni la storiografia e la testimonianza hanno appiattito l'esperienza femminile in una declinazione universale, in un neutro linguistico che, dimenticando i corpi sessuati, ha reso opaca l'intenzionalità stessa dello sterminio. Seguendo questo filo, Daniela Padoan ha chiesto a tre testimoni straordinarie - Liliana Segre, Goti Bauer, Giuliana Tedeschi, internate ad Auschwitz-Birkenau nello stesso periodo ma in età diverse della vita - di ripensare la loro esperienza di persecuzione, prigionia e ritorno a una impossibile normalità declinandola al femminile. In un fitto intreccio di richiami e rimandi interni, di racconti talvolta mai fatti in pubblico, le tre visioni differenti e complementari diventano una narrazione sola, densissima di significato, che si fa relazione, dono di parole, in una circolarità in cui il lettore viene raggiunto, intaccato dalla viva voce di chi possiede "una doppia cittadinanza, nel mondo dei morti e nel mondo dei vivi".
