About this listen

"...well orated by reader George Vafiadis. The language and sentiment are not as outmoded as some listeners might expect and it definitely feels patriotic to hear again the fundamentals of America's beginnings." (Kliatt Magazine)

George Washington wrote, "I find that Common Sense is working a powerful change there (Virginia) in the minds of many men." The passion of the patriot Thomas Paine comes straight on and one can better understand the forces that shaped this country.

Thomas Paine was born in Thetford, England, in 1737. His father was a staymaker. Thomas worked as a tax collector and was let go for petitioning for higher pay. Benjamin Franklin encouraged him to emigrate to the United States in 1774, where he published a series of pamphlets called The American Crisis. In 1787 he went back to Europe and published political books that were publicly burned. He went to France and helped draft the French constitution. He was imprisoned for a year before coming back to the United States. He died in 1809.

A MUST READ FOR EVERY AMERICAN

THOMAS PAINE WAS A VISIONARY WHO WAS THE CATALYST FOR OUR INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM AND HIS TEACHINGS SHOULD BE MADE PART OF HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY SO THAT EVERY MAN WOMAN AND CHILD MAY GAIN WISDOM AND FIND COURAGE TO SPEAK UP AMD TAKE ACTION AGAINST INJUSTICE AS PAINE DID IN HIS TIME. HE WROTE UNDER A DIFFERENT NAME OUT OF SELF PRESERVATION BUT THIS WAS AN ACT OF WISDOM NOT FEAR, FOR WITHOUT HIM AND HIS WORK AMERICA WOULD NOT BE FREE. HE WOULD BE DEEPLY SORROWFUL TO SEE WHAT HAS BECOME OF THE NATION HE RISKED HIS LIFE TO BRING TO SALVATION. THE TIME FOR BRAVE AND VISIONARY THINKERS AND EDUCATORS HAS NOT PASSED NOR SHALL IT EVER, THEY WILL FOREVER BE NEEDED AS EVIL IS EVER ADAPTIVE AND EVOLVING SO TO SHOULD BE THE MINDS OF THE COMMON MAN; THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO ASSURE A PEACEFUL AND FRUITFUL FUTURE FOR OURSELVES AND THE GENERATIONS TO COME.
