Great story, TERRIBLE Narrator

What did you like best about Comrades at Odds? What did you like least?

I love the story and the closure Drizzt gets with the Ellifain tragedy. It is a short story so what is not to like?

What was one of the most memorable moments of Comrades at Odds?

The Ending, I don't want to spoil it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I like Ice-T as an artist but he should stick to what he is best at. Who pronounces the "W" is Sword? Ice-T does. Who leaves off the "H" in Human? Ice-T does. This story contains lots of time dealing with Khazid'hea so we hear the word sWord a lot. It is so funny to me that Ice-T would learn how pronounce the names of all characters and cities perfectly but then pronounce normal words so terribly. The other issue is you can detect his reading being spliced together. I am going to listen to my O.G. Original Gangster album and remember how cool Ice-T is.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I would see any movie based on Drizzt

Any additional comments?

Despite my review, listen to this. It is a great story and it is free.

I liked it.

I wish it hadn't ended where it did but I suppose that's why it is a series.

Ice-T just set the bar

Now I don't think I'll ever be able to enjoy a A book read to me as much as I enjoyed ice-T

The Deep Nerd Stuff

Ice-T brings a entirely new perspective to Drizzt.

Found myself really bored

I like Ice-T, but honestly I struggled to get through this. It felt less like a fantasy story and more like a lecture. Kept p putting me to sleep

Great story, great narration

I wasn’t sure if I’d like hearing a Drizzt story read by Ice T, but this was GREAT.

He has a great voice (as you might expect) and reads very clearly - no rewinding and going “what was that word?”.

And even though he was just reading one short story, he put in the time and effort to learn all the pronunciations and did them all correctly (something the substitute narrator for the “Transitions” Drizzt books couldn’t be bothered to do for three whole books!)

Very, very well done and a very enjoyable listen!

Story is hard to follow and even harder to listen to

The action sequences live up to everything the previous books brought. The challenge comes when listening to the long periods of backstory that have nothing to do with the current story.

Perhaps the greatest challenge was listening to the narrator. His work cannot be characterized as a performance because there was no attempt to Animate the characters through changing voices. That is likely what made it monotonous to listen to.

I am disappointed because I have enjoyed every other book in the series.

Ok story brought down by Ice-T's reading

Ice-T spoke about his reading of this book on his podcast and he struggled with it and didn't enjoy it. He told his manager he absolutely cannot book him for another fantasy book reading again. You can tell, he's just not into it and you can hear it in his reading. It's hard listening to it. The story itself is ok.

The story is good but the narration not so much

I realize Ice-t is a huge fan of the Drizzt series and wished to narrate, but his pacing is all over the place, and there is almost zero attempt at any kind of vocal differentiation between characters. The narration ends up being distracting from the content as a result.

Listen to this BECAUSE Ice-T narrated it.

This was not a great story. Not quite the worst, but hardly a stand out in a collection of cutting room floor stories.

And then they got Ice-T narrate it. And it was AWESOME.

It's not a clinical Books for the Blind reading. It's Ice-T reads D&D, and it sounds like it. Ice-T brings something magical to Forgotten Realms. I've certainly never heard violence and combat narrated with such power.

The whole collection was worth it just to hear this piece of narration.
